I used to do DOD work and once had all the certifications, but when I moved to Virginia my satellite internet did not work with the DOD websites. I believe it was the signal latency, so I had to give up the work. I wonder if the cell internet I have now would work? It's issue is the lack of a fixed I.P. address.
I just looked up the specs on 155mm Howitzer shells there is a shortage of, they are a little too long for my biggest machine, dammit. Pretty sure in the dozen years since I did DOD work they have increased paper work and packaging requirements, not lessened them, they probably want more certifications also.
Most of the work I was doing was for replacement parts on wear items, some of the packaging requirements were stupid to say the least. I had an ex Air Force mechanic working for me part time that had seen some of the small fasteners we were making. He was baffled why we had to but one per labeled bag when he said they use 100 or so at a time.
Most of the work I was doing involved 50% of the time to packaging and paperwork, mostly all crap you don't have to do for the private sector. It just adds to the cost.
I will credit the military for keeping a lot of old equipment alive. A dozen years ago I was doing work from drawings that dated back to WWII.
