Most IQ tests do not test intelligence. They tend to test general knowledge. You could test low on such a test if you don't know what the capital of Australia is or if you don't know what the Tonkin Gulf incident was. Perhaps the most infamous such test was one where researchers concluded that black people were less intelligent than whites. The test was biased toward upper class white culture.

Constructing a valid IQ test is not simple. An obvious approach is to concentrate on problem solving ability but this too has its problems. Perhaps you can write a best selling novel but you suck at math. Shakespeare and Einstein were both geniuses, just at different things.

That's why it's meaningless, but again, that does not apply to my father.

I think I already told you my father spoke to Einstein every morning.

And I don't think it applies to me either!

I think maybe I'll start a math thread next.

You reminded me of the old TV show, Malcolm in the Middle.

You just set the crowd of cadets around him chanting him on.

"53...54...55...56...57..........Ohhhhhhh.....56.. .55...54...53"

That was a great film Tom, and I didn't mention it, but Paul Newman was a seriously great actor.

"Stop feeding off me."

Cool Hand Luke (1967).

Could be he as even better than Nicholson or Eastwood!

The original "The Hustler" case in point.

I'm offended by this comment. Your posts are vague and borderline incoherent. My apologies if you have suffered a recent blow to the head or have dementia.

What do you mean "recent"?

I thought I was just being overly annoyed by his posts. Then I read the Iraq War thread. Please strike the words "recent" and "borderline" from post #23.

Yep.

Being good at "life" is much more important. Social skills, dealing with others, and managing your time is where successful people succeed. You can also throw drive and want to in there as well.

IQ tests are mostly math and recognizing patterns. While they may be adept at identifying those that can problem solve quickly, they don't identify the social skills needed in order to succeed in life.

These "intelligence" tests try to measure what we know...but "knowing", and "doing"...are many miles apart. Nothing is more commonplace than wasted "brainpower".

I once read an article postulating that "EQ" (emotional quotient), the ability to keep your worst instincts in check and productively interact with others, is much more reliable than IQ as a predictor of success.

And I fervently believe there are numerous types of intelligence-and lack thereof. Nor do I place much faith in intelligence tests.

To support that, I was tested in high school and soon called in to have several guidance counselors , the principal, AND vice principal, straight up call me a slacker for not getting straight A's.

If they divulged my exact score, I don't recall it, but I do remember them saying it was just a hair beneath genius level. And they scoffed when I protested that I simply could NOT grasp Algebra 2.

But I couldn't. I just couldn't. So much for IQ scores.
