I've been tracking this for a while. While it offers some advantages, it is not as accurate as the beam system. GPS is getting better all the time but at this point I don't think it should be used for official timing. The decision has already been made so I guess we'll see if it lives up to the promises.

Too bad.

I was hoping we'd get the best of both worlds.

Imagine the starting delays on cloudy days. Searching for satellite, searching for satellite....

Don't get me wrong, there are some good things. It just isn't as precise as I'd like and from a timing perspective I think it is a step backwards. It does help with one of the big shortcomings of the beam system, timing turf races when the rail is moved around.

The benefits of GPS, in addition to timing, include the ability to provide comprehensive data for each runner during the entire running of the race, which can be used to drive on-screen graphics as well as positions and margins for charts. In addition, GPS has great promise to track workouts, which would add race-like accuracy to those morning preps.
Its coming in as a timing product and improved on-screen graphics.

But for the player, the real game changer will be wave generated data.
They're scaling this after testing it for less than 3 months? Tests started in July.. They must of saw benefits that they want to get to quickly. Usually that means they see $$.
