Texas Leads Pro-Life Fight with Unique Law
Texas Becomes First State to Ban Abortion Once Heartbeat Detected
Other states have passed “heartbeat” bills, but, once signed into law, abortion rights activists filed lawsuits challenging them. Subsequently, courts have blocked these laws, ruling they are unconstitutional in light of the Supreme Court’s 1973 ruling in Roe v. Wade and subsequent decisions.
The Texas measure, however, contains a unique enforcement mechanism whereby any private citizen may file a civil lawsuit against an abortion provider or any other individual who “aids or abets” a “criminal abortion.”

I thought late term abortions were illegal unless the mother's life was in danger?

Didn't you listen to the Democrat primary debates? It sounded like they were all in favor up until and including at time of birth.
I do wonder what percentage of women know they are pregnant at 6 weeks.

I think Ralph has it wrong, the mother can't be sued, but anyone who aids or abets her in getting the abortion, can be. And the "point" is money. There's essentially a $10K bounty to collect for any private, unaffiliated citizen who turns in someone who is found to have has violated the law.

From what I’m hearing here on the radio, this includes the mother who submits to an illegal abortion.
I’m sure there will be a test case soon enough

No. The law is clear that the mother/patient can not be sued. But pretty much anyone affiliated with her or the abortion attempt can be. Even the person who drives the patient to the doctor.

I only listened to them briefly here and there, most of them I could not stand to listen to them speak.

That's the way I understood it as well.
This case will eventually make it to the Supreme Court. The ruling handed down yesterday merely bans any blocks against the law. In others, the court refused to impose a temporary injunction.
Interestingly, the sixth so-called conservative on the court (Roberts) voted against the ban.

So now they can sue the mother in law? Even better!
