In Memoriam

My very freedom relies upon the sacrifices of so many before me.

I raise my flag high this weekend in honor of those before me.

I too want to honor all our Veterans this weekend. Especially my 1st cousin Dale Winters who we just buried at Indiantown Gap National Cemetery last friday. Dale was one of 2 Green Berets from our small hometown. He served in Vietnam and Laos. He said he'd have to take the things they did Laos to his grave. May Dale and all veterans RIP.

Memorial Day is always a very solemn time when you have to step back from everything else going on in your life and be thankful for all the people that defended us in this great place.

Surprised only since 1971:

Memorial Day is an American holiday, observed on the last Monday of May, honoring the men and women who died while serving in the U.S. military. Memorial Day 2019 occurs on Monday, May 27.

Originally known as Decoration Day, it originated in the years following the Civil War and became an official federal holiday in 1971. Many Americans observe Memorial Day by visiting cemeteries or memorials, holding family gatherings and participating in parades. Unofficially, it marks the beginning of the summer season.

I observe Memorial Day with a moment of silence, I looked for this graphic to display in this thread for others who might like it as I do.

I'm old enough to remember when there was no such thing as Monday holidays, éxcept for Labor Day.Memorial Day was always May 30.Surprised to learn it didn't become a federal holiday until 1971.
