The higher up a spinal fracture the worse it can be. A C-3 if that is accurate is almost at the top. That qualifies as a break in a neck bone, real scary, I am keeping my fingers crossed he recovers as best as possible.

1st thing I thought of, too.

Last time the horse worked was July 13th.

a work only every 10 days or so when you are prepping for a big G1 stakes race is kinda not working the horse very hard.

Seems like a horse this young must have had thumper problems?

what I meant to say is "developed" thumper problems, cuz let's face it, a $325K or so purchase, insurer isn't going to give you insurance on horse with a heart defect.

So....

Please keep this guy in your prayers, too. He's had a tough recuperation, as are all spinal cord injuries, but is off the ventilator and learning to walk again.

Many people do not know that in 2000, St. Juilien became the first African-American jockey to ride in the Kentucky Derby in 79 years

https://www.paulickreport.com/tag/marlon-st-julien/

didn't mean to steal espinosa topic, but didn't see a st. julien topic so thought I'd add him in here for well wishers.

I am happy for him, but also worried. These guys don't have an exit strategy for their chosen profession, even the high profile ones like Victor that have made good money. I know they love the job, but he got a clear sign that it was time to retire. I hope nothing even worse happens to him as he resumes his career.

just because you break your neck doesn't mean you will have a tough rehab or limited ability or any of that. It all depends on the break and many things involved. One of my closest friends broke through both sides of his C3 racing motorcycles. Had two screws put in. Very little rehab. Six weeks later was back shingling roofs and eight weeks after back riding bikes. That was twelve years ago and has no ill effects from it. So many variables involved to determine their post op fate.

In regards to horses having heart attacks, it's nothing new. Many have died from that over the years. You just hear about them now due to the internet. Prior to the internet, if you weren't reading the racing forum you didn't know about it.

cleared to ride...I always found that funny. It likely went like this

"look, your bones are all healed but I strongly advise you against riding again"

Thanks doc!
