I know people probably get tired of hearing about Gulfstream, but here goes anyway.

i hate to be too didactic, but, you appear to be timing from when the gates start to open instead of when the horses actually break from the gate (this is roughly half a second, maybe a bit less). is that accurate?
i'm not sure what the standard for non run-up timing is, tbf.

In quarter-horse racing (no runup) the timer begins when the starter plunges the button to open the gate.

Doesn't really matter , as long as you're consistent. A lot easier to use the gate than the horses
The only time this would even start to matter is if all the horses broke very slowly.

Two things...
One, I don't know what didactic means.
Two, I am timing from the gate, but I'm doing a lot more than that. I freeze the video when the winner hits the finish line and annotate the time on the video. I think back up by the official time. This shows me where the "official" timing began, the portion after run up. Anything from the point back to the gate is the time of the run up.
I should mention that there is no possible way to determine the actual starting point of timing visually when the rails are out at Gulfstream (or any other course, for that matter).

I would argue it matters a lot when the run up is 500 to 600 feet. A race that is almost 1 1/16 miles is being listed as 7.5f. Nearly 12% of the race is being timed. Not only that, it is the 12% that probably has the biggest effect on final time.

Something definitely amiss there. I haven't investigated that one yet but my projected variant based on the times was 1 point slow for the two other routes, 30 points fast for that one.

Not sure how you conflated my response as claiming run up didn't matter. Was clearly referring to whether you use the gate opening vs the horse leaving the gate.

You're right, my mistake...though I don't know what conflated means. I generally have a very good vocabulary but with this happening twice in one thread I may be slipping.

There are no run ups being reported any longer for these races. They just show up as 0, which is a bit misleading since some tracks do actually use zero (like Mahoning Valley), but in this case there is definitely still a LOT of run up. Today, for example, there was nearly nine seconds of run up in a race timed in just over 90 seconds.

equibase has gone back and retroactively removed the 7.5 furlong turf run-ups back to june 9th for races run off the rail, as well. somebody please tell these guys this is definitely NOT acceptable!
anyways here are some of the missing run-ups from the gulfstream park website, if you care

I think Equibase is taking the stance that not reporting the run up is better than reporting a fictional run up. I agree with them personally. It is a farce that Gulfstream labels these races 7.5 furlongs. It is a slap in the face to horseplayers.
