At one time, Buster Brown shoe stores wanted to x-ray adults' and children's feet in order to determine an accurate shoe size. Each store had its own machine to get the job done.
The worst one I read about from the 1920's was a magic elixir called Radithor that was hawked as a "cure all" and it's secret ingredient was radium. Did not work out too well for it's users..
