an example of the rules:



so nobody gets crushed only win bets are allowed
you each must bet on one horse each race
you agree on the amount of each bet - for example $10.00
you agree that all bets are on horses under 20/1 so nobody gets crushed
I guess it is possible that one player could hit 3 longshots but pretty unlikely

if one wins and one loses you keep a running tally of the results
you must agree on the running tally after each race so there are no disputes
if neither horse wins no money is owed or paid out

so nobody has bad feelings - if one player goes down by $150 or more he is allowed to quit for the day owing just what he owes at that time

after the last race you have a final tally of who owes who

because of recent technology the payments can easily be made using a variety of different tech services

or you could just carry over until next Thursday







or you could work up a variant - for example - if your horse beats your buddies or your buddies horse beats yours then you owe or pay whatever the winning horse paid to show

if neither horse showed you would agree to an amount to be paid with the horse with the higher odds getting paid 20% more than the horse with the lower odds



might be a fun way to pass a Thursday if you only like to bet serious money on Satuday's stakes

i did this with Jimmy the Greek for about 5 years, and we called it swapping horses. one race he picked first, the next one i did...

he got me on THUNDERUMBLE in the Jim Dandy and Travers. one of them paid $50 to win. the awful part was i had dinner with Richie O'Connell and Hollywood Herbie the night before and they loved the horse.

When I don't have a big opinion on a race I think a "draft" with a friend is a fun way to have a little action. First person up gets top pick, other person chooses the next 2 horses & then 1 back & forth until the field is done. Select a base wager, whoever wins gets that amount. If you finish 1-2 double the winnings, triple if you've got the top 3 and so on through the super. That's the way I like to play it, no takeout & at least someone goes home a winner.

horsetourneys.com has various tournaments on most tracks. you are laying around 10% give or take depending on the type of tourney and amount of the event... the juice that you are laying is about half as much as you pay pari-mutually, plus you don't pay any breakage and everyone in the tourney is effected equally from the gate punchers and after the bell boys and the CAW.

Horsetourneys has heads-up tournaments ranging from $20 to $1,500...and the past performances are free when you enter. A token $2 win and place wager is placed on your chosen horse in each race on the given card...and the guy with the highest total wins. And they offer a "pick-and-pray" option, where you must enter all your picks before the first race goes off...so you don't have to stay by the computer all day. Your bets are locked in and can't be changed...so any late scratches or surface changes don't matter because they affect both players the same way.

The best game in town...IMO.

I was kind of surprised tournaments didn't catch on more, but I would only play if the picks are locked in before the start. Otherwise, it stops being about handicapping and starts becoming about tournament betting strategies.

My very first tournament taught me that. I got a freeroll into a tournament. With one race to go I was in the top few and in position to cash. The players that were totally buried in the tournament had no chance to get anything unless the longest shot on the board came in (he looked hopeless). But with no other choice they took him. He came in. That flipped the entire board. Had a few people found some angle on him and took a shot before seeing where they stood I'd have had no problem, but who wants to out-handicap people all day and then lose on some random Hail Mary pass at the end that had nothing to do with handicapping.

of course, but it seems that most of the big tourneys are not that type of format. payout limits are the biggest reason for what classhandicapper is talking about though.
I like both formats, though I'd definitely like to see more pick and pray/lockdown tourneys being used for some of the lucrative tourneys.


derbywars has a nice $275 entry 8 person lockdown tourney daily. the only problem there is that they are highly limited to the tracks they can offer.

If we reserve this thread for only "no takeout" examples...then we might as well shut it down right now.

at casino's they take 10% out of pots in holdem up to $6 per hand.. if there is only $50 in a pot you are paying close to 20%.

i rather bet these tournaments. you can bet what you want and not effect your odds.
