The UK is a constitutional monarchy. That is, a country who retain a monarchy but the monarchs powers are limited by the constitution. The UK actually has no written constitution but it's constitution is an amalgamation of acts passed by parliament. The Queen is not part of the government has no governmental duties as such. Her role is mainly ceremonial as Head of State. The Queen reigns, the government rules.

Just to correct this slightly. The King did not forbid Churchill to visit the front as he wasn't able to do this. The King did try to persuade Churchill not to, notably on D Day. Letters sent by the King to Churchill on this subject have been published.

And yes I'll be the first to admit there are a lot of things about Britain's past that have been pretty disgraceful but what has that got to do with her personally?

I suppose you reserve the same anger for all the other nations that have done similar in the past. China, Japan, France, Spain, Germany, Russia, etc. I could go on and on. There are many countries in the world that have things they should be ashamed about in their past including your own.
