There would be no talk of a first ever disqualification and future trivial objections if it hadn't been for the amazing ability of Chris McCarron to avoid going down in the stretch on Alysheba in the 1987 Derby when Bet Twice drifted out in front of him and Alysheba's nose almost hit the ground.

But yes, traffic at the top of the stretch matters more than a slow start Isn't this obvious?
Wrong, if you get wiped out at the start your race is pretty well over unless you have a super horse

Several have said things along the lines of "this type of jostling happens all the time in a 20-horse field." I'm curious for other examples from previous Kentucky Derbies of the magnitude of Maximum Security's interference with War of Will that were not called. Can anyone share some examples?

(Examples where a foul may have altered the outcome - so not things like the Bet Twice/Alysheba incident.)

Not the Derby... but remember Afleet Alex's 2005 Preakness Scrappy T blows the turn and knocks Afleet to his knees...

"Afleet Alex. Scrappy T. HOW MUCH THE BEST IS HE!"
One of my favorite calls.

The same people here would have left Scrappy T up if Afleet Alex went down should they have had a bet on the horse.

If this was another 50/1 shot rather than a favorite you would not be seeing near the discussion.

That's not true at all at 10 furlongs. Plenty of time.to get back in the race.

the interesting thing to me is that it looks like Country House also fouled War of Will - he's definitely leaning in towards him and it definitely looks like he brushed him

I'd like to hear some comments on that

Stills can be very deceptive. A split second sooner later might have shown the opposite The video clearly shows that War of Wills was forced out into Country House by Max Sec. CH was likely leaning back in against the block. You can show anything by cherry picking the stills. That's why stewards don't use stills. I knew that some people would refuse to believe their own eyes even with the video proof.

I predict the decision of the three stewards in the 12th race at Churchill Downs . .

I predict the decision of the three stewards in the 12th race at Churchill Downs on May 4th, 2019 will be remembered for its injustice against the blue collar claimer Maximum Security as SCOTUS is remembered for its decision against Dred Scott.

The best horse won the race and the stewards stole it from him.
You know how ludicrous you sound. Horses arent machines. Gafflione had to grab him right up to avoid going down. He was making a move that looked like was going on by til that happened. How much was taken out of him stopping up then restarting?

As for many people saying Long range Toddy had no chance and was tiring, watch again and you see him stop abruptly when he was grabbed up. Not saying he was gonna win but to say he was done is foolish, his air could've been shutoff for him to stop like that at the same time the incident occurred.

DERBY DQ

After viewing the NBC slow motion replay which was from (I assume) a different view than the stewards were reviewing; I believe Gary West's claim to victory is the correct one and I have noticed for several years that Churchill Downs Inc. is all about THEIR bottom line which is the casino business. As Mr. West has also referred to as their "greed." The people on that stretch turn are mostly NOT horseplayers AND they are mostly drunk on the beer that is easily available. Churchill was lucky that there wasn't a major catastrophe on Saturday. I've been to 4 Derbies and love Churchill Downs, The Derby, Breeders Cup and all levels of horse racing.

Like I have been saying, you can clearly see Long Range Toddy is moving every bit as well as Country House. He lost ALL chance of a top 5 paycheck finish.

These wishful thinkers just don't get it. I wouldn't care if Maximum Security ran off by 20. If he cost another horse a better placing where money is involved, then he should have come down. Which is what he did.
