Houston Colt 45s

For the first three years of their existence the expansion Houston team was known as the Colt 45s with a revolver as part of their logo. In 1965 they moved into the Astrodome and became the Astros. It was not a big deal at all, there were no complaints. That shows how pussified our culture has become in the last 60 years. Cleveland Guardians?? Gimme a f***ing break.

Three seasons of professional baseball played outdoors in Houston prior to the opening of the Astrodome. By comparison the retractable roof included in today's stadium is a feature that is seldom used. Dual purpose stadiums were once a mainstay as well. Our present affluence is in many ways really astounding.

My dad took me to a few games at Colt Stadium. Most in Houston were just happy to finally have a team. The conditions fans had to endure there were horrible. The heat, humidity, bugs, and mosquitoes made for an unpleasant experience. To make matters worse, The Colt 45's were a grab-bag of old timers ending their careers ( Robin Roberts, Nellie Fox) and a host of players few ever heard of. They were barely able to best the Mets as the better shit in MLB. The ballpark was dismantled and shipped to Mexico when the Dome opened. What a contrast in parks.
