How to chauffeur a congressman

"Empty his trash. Always have hand sanitizer and gum at the ready. And don’t bother with “unnecessary conversation” — the congressman doesn’t have time for your chit-chat.

Who knew it could take eight pages of instructions on how to properly escort a member of Congress around his district?

Drivers are expected to transport not only Rokita’s toothbrush and toothpaste but also stock and tote around the district a nearly 20-item supply box that Rokita’s staffers call “the football.”

Rokita needs a hanger in the car for his jacket. Never allow him to be photographed with a drink in his hand. And never forget, the memo states multiple times in boldface, underlined letters, to remind the 47-year-old to bring the essentials."

Let's all run out and vote for him!

We have term limits. The limits apply every 2 years for Representatives and every 6 years for Senators.

People in a democracy get the government that they deserve.

Its easy to say, but that is not how it works. Incumbents have an incredible advantage in every election. That is why incumbents win landslide victories in local elections.

I also question the integrity of local elections. I remember many years ago voting for some third party candidate in a local election because of my distaste for the electoral system. Do you know how many votes "my candidate" received? Nope, it wasn't one. It was ZERO. My vote was not counted -- and how many others were ignored? I would guess the candidate also voted for himself -- and his family.

You are literally factual if you blamed the voters for the nightmare. You can look down on people and say they need protection from themselves. But this system is rigged. People know it and stay away. People whose JOBS were created by the incumbent, and companies whose CONTRACTS are financed by the incumbents -- are sure to vote.

True but not really. Often times, we end up getting the elected officials the parties and power centers wish us to have. If Joe Blow is the preferred candidate, he gets the funding and party support and wins much more often than not. Not impossible to buck that, but very difficult. If you survive that and get elected, the party will then squeeze you out of committees, etc and then run against your pitiful influence/record next time. Both parties do this and probably only 5% at best of viable candidates are somewhat to fully independent of party machinery.

Rinse and repeat. Even by voting someone out of office, you still get the same self-serving, party-serving individuals replacing them. I'm afraid something more than simple democracy will be required to shake this tree clean of the rotten fruit on it.

But if you don't vote one of them out of office, how are you ever going to get them all to agree to vote themselves out of office?

Article 5 - Convention of States

I'd say we are long overdue to make some corrections.

#1 term limits

#2 redefine birthright citizenship

#3 ban political parties

feel free to add...

Convention of States. Worst idea ever. Alaska, Idaho, Kansas, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota, Utah, Montana, and Wyoming with a total population of 11,500,000 would have nine votes. California win a population over 35 Milion would have one vote.

Wow, that couldn't happen here, could it? That sounds like what might happen in a constitutional republic or something like that.

As it stands now, anyone born here - regardless of the status of his parents - is automatically a citizen.

I favor a stipulation that at least one of the parents be a citizen of this country in order for their offspring to be granted American citizenship.

That's the way it is in most other places on earth, and a damned sensible policy it is.

Of course, leftists prefer to leave it the way it is now. That's how their chosen people - illegal immigrants - get to stay here forever.

You couldn't get 50 states to agree on an official flavor of ice cream let alone something important Iike the issues you brought up.

BTW, I vote for pistachio.

That is an interesting proposal. To your second point, I don't think that this is something that would have traction anywhere. Immigration reform is not something that politicians seem inclined to give much more than lip service to; liberals or conservatives.
