Nevermind is Nirvana's debut and was an excellent first record. There are only two outstanding songs on the album -- Smells Like Teen Spirit and Come As You Are. The rest are average or worse -- just filler.

Every song on Who's Next is excellent and there is no filler.

Who's Next is far better than Nevermind. Cobain would agree and he had the true rock and roll spirit in him.

Great album. Caroline No might be my all time favorite. It's hauntingly good. God Only Knows may be one of the best songs ever written. So many hits on this record. It is right up there with Who's Next. But there are some songs like I'm Waiting for the Day, Let's Go Away for a While, I know There's an Answer, and Here Today that just don't stand up to the quality of the rest of the record. Nor do they stand up to the quality of all 7 of Townshend's songs on Who's Next.

Who's Next is better than Pet Sounds.

Boston had a great first album, but only one or two hits. Lots of filler.

Who's Next is much better than Boston's Boston.

Damn the Torpedoes is terrific. I spent many hours listening to it, but it is no where near as good as Who's Next. Way too much filler to surpass Who's Next. The last three cuts on the record are filler. You Tell Me and What Are You Doin' in My Life are forgettable. Louisiana Rain is the last song on the record and is 6 minutes of filler. Century City is better than average, but far below the any song on Who's Next.

Hotel California has some filler. The Last Resort is 7:24 long and the last song on the record for a reason. They had to fill up the space. It is a contender for being better than Who's Next, but it is not.

Who's Next is better than Damn the Torpedoes and Hotel California.

What are you Smokin'? You couldn't turn on a rock/pop radio station without hearing something from Boston's debut record. One filler song -- Take Me Home Tonight and that still got airplay. And if "hits" are what you judge an album on then something from The Beatles or Elton John would be the better than Who's Next.

But is it better than Who's Next? That's a good question. I like it better than The Wall.

I'm out of time for tonight, but I want to go back and listen to Dark Side and then compare it to Who's Next.
The Wall is worthy imho. The Wall is timeless.

Deep Purple: Machine Head.
The Cars: Candy O
David Bowie: Station 2 Station

Far Away Eyes is one of my favorite songs of all time. I currently have 2 Some Girls records. One is the expensive original cover that is in plastic and the other is the one we plat on our restored Motorola down in the man-cave.

The 12th time I saw them in concert was the 50th year of touring. We saw them at the Staples center in LA, ate dinner at Flemings first, and then smoke some pot with some old hippies before the concert. It is the only times in the 14 times that I have seen them in concert they sang "Far Away Eyes." It was awesome!!!!!

I will go back and listen to it again. Your point about hits is a valid one.

I own Nevermind and it is a strong debut but in my opinion not every song was as strong as every song on Who's Next. As I said earlier the weakest song on Who's Next is My Wife and that was the best Entwhistle ever did.

Who's Next was so strong that Townsend decided not to put "Pure and Easy" on it.

I started thinking about why he left it off. One, it would have made 9 songs on the album which would make the album close to 48 minutes with 5 songs on one side and four on the other. Or they could have omitted My Wife which would have meant less royalties for Entwhistle. Also with 48 minutes of music they would have had to compromise the sound quality because of the physical limitations of vinyl. More songs would mean they would have to record it quieter which would mean more surface noise and narrower dynamic range.

If it would have been a CD only release Pure and Easy would have been on it and made it even greater.

I will go back and listen to Nevermind but I am skeptical that every song is equally as good as every song on Who's Next. Townshend already had four other records under his belt including Tommy. It is hard to believe Cobain had the experience or talent to write a better record than Who's Next. Not to mention that Nirvana was barely better than a garage band at the time. It was their producer who made the album great. He saw the raw talent and molded it.
