paving my street

3 weeks ago, the city decided to pave my road. my street is not a big one but it must have needed about $50,000 worth of warm mix asphalt. add in the labor for a day and you are at about $60,000.

this morning at 6:00 a.m. i am hearing the jackhammers going on my street. i walk out and see that its the gas company. i asked them if there was a problem, they said no just updating the pipes and the connections to the houses on the whole street. the re pave will cost another $60,000.

twenty years ago the city taxes on my house was $2200 for the whole year, today it is $25,000 for the year. my house isn't worth 12 times more either. they have closed many schools and haven't added to much to the police or fire department. we did elect a mayor that had strong union backing, and this is what we get, plenty of work for union people with good pay and more taxes.

eventually i am going to sell my house to some nice oriental people that got plenty of money burning a hold in their pockets.

Most cities and towns of east coast states ... in New Jersey, New York, Connecticut and the rest of New England (save New Hampshire) all hit their home owners between the eyes with high and unjustified property taxes.

Don't know where lambo lives exactly but in NYC suburbs, Westchester County, NY, and in both northern NJ and southern Connecticut, $25,000 per year is closer to the low end than not!

A number of cities in the east are seeing taxes rise. Some of it has to do with the fact that there is not a lot of growth in the tax base and no new sources of revenue, some of it has to do with increasing capital needs for infrastructure, some of it has to do with still providing traditional services (snow removal, garbage pick up, e.g.), some has to do with the cost of municipal workers, especially police and fire, and a lot has to do with school district costs. $25,000 is outrageous though, even for the east.

Incredible!

I pay about $3700 (same- Municipal + School Board) for a prop worth > 8. Should I buy something in the near future, it sure as hell won't be in that entire area. Even in FL, I'll go right to that line in the listing, first!

I live in Ludlow MA, about 80 miles west of Boston and my home (5 room,3 Br, 1 bath, 1350 square ft, 10,500 sq. Ft. Lot) is valued at 190,000. My property taxes are about $2700 per year

I don't follow real estate because I have no intention of moving but I would hazard to guess my home in an equivalent community in the Boston area would be at least 500,000,with the accompanying rise in taxes. I'd be paying, even assuming the same rate, close to 7500 in taxes. And I'm wliling to bet that the rates are higher.

i have 4 units in my old victorian house. i have over 12000 square feet of space.

there is a cap on property taxes in Massachusetts of 2 1/2% statewide. the valuations go up every year though. in Boston the tax rate for commercial property is higher than residential. a muti family is considered comercial.

If you think that is bad try living in California for 50 years like I did. Taxes and government fees went up and up (percentage wise and $$ values adjusted for inflation) while there was no money to upgrade roads, schools were over crowded (State lotto started in the late 80's was supposed to pay for that)
and general maintenance, (graffiti removal, road repair, trash clean up, street lights) went down hill. Property taxes are average, but they get you everywhere else, and cost of living his high. Good example when I was in High School in the mid 70's a parking ticket for over staying a time limit was $2, in the same area it had increased to $48 by the mid 90's, bet it is $100 now.
Sales tax was 9% in my area when I left in 2010.
Of course California State Employees get 2-3x private sector money for their skills with full benefits and even they will admit working for the State is so easy, most say they probably only work an average of 2 hours in an 8 hour shift.
