You have to admit "the Rabbit" #4, was a factor in the outcome.

agree, we havent seen that in a while, I suppose while not a rabbit Promises Fulfilled was the last real speed horse to push a very fast pace, of course he was a good horse unlike the 4.

Magical moment. When I saw that one slipping up the rail in the last 100 yards I thought, this is what Derbies are all about. Included it with the Oaks winner yesterday for a nice return, and hit some minor payoffs for a once in a lifetime Derby.

I'll need to pork-chop the Reed barn at Belterra, just for good karma.

Call it a rabbit, call it whatever you want. I like it.

These Derby races where the favorite gets to bolt out of the gate then take a break sitting a couple lengths off the pace are lame. We’ve had a lot of those since the points system came along.

You’ve got 20 spots to fill, there should be horses of all skill sets. If you can’t train your horse to leave the pace alone or find a jockey capable of managing it then you shouldn’t win the Derby. Period.

Rich Strike was inbred from Smart Strike. Sire(Keen Ice) out of Curlin( Smart Strike). The Dame, Gold Strike (Smart Strike).

Bred to run all day.

Almost like Rich Strike was running scared, especially considering the savaging of the pony after the race.

Went back to see what might have been missed and re-watched the Jeff Ruby.

Rare to see horses make late runs up the rail on the synth at TP but this one did. Galloped out a mile ahead of the others as well. Still wouldn't have used on top.

Raise A Native sire line, fast final 3/8 at Turfway, maiden score by open lengths on the surface. Not far fetched but much to my disappointment as I was holding several future pool Epicenter/Zandon exacta boxes. For some reason I didn't use the All Others option as much like I usually do. Had it with Epi for a buck or two that covers all the other bets. Still... Oops.

And probably play the banjo all day as well.

Maybe I missed it, but was there a thread made about the pace of this Derby?

WHAT DO WE KNOW?

1) There will be no Triple Crown winner this year.

2) Never run a horse with only two starts, no matter how talented.

3) Don't bet on any horse to be in the super with only three starts unless it is a superstar. Not enough foundation.

4) Never bet a UAE horse to be in the top 4. Yet come next year thousands will be fawning all over whoever that will be. Makes no sense to waste money on an angle that has never produced a positive result.

5) Epicenter was the best horse and will win the Preakness if he runs. He looked to be getting past by Zandon and he re-rallied last 100 yards. Was way farther back than he has ever been and responded.

6)Miracles do happen!!!

My conclusion - another Mine That Bird effort, where he loved the track and got the inside trip. Pace was hot, which burned up what ended up being mostly cheap speed. Kudos to who ran big close to the hot pace.

Without pace, bias and track condition to his liking, I don't see Rich Strike displaying another G1 winning run, until BC Day comes back to a rainy day at CD or is held on the plastic at TP or Woodbine.

Another so-so crop.

By the way, who's going to start the conspiracy theory of Lukas scratching out the 20 horse, winning the Oaks, and then the miracle upset by the Calumet bred stayer from Turfway? Hmmmm.
