One thing I hate about BB affair is that this horse would have paraded in the classic, Pletcher did the same with Liam's Map, chickened from the classic.

The Big Ass Fans Dirt Mile (which Collmus obviously takes great pleasure in saying) is the worst part of the expansion of the BC. It clearly cannibalizes the Classic, and may also hurt the Sprint.

Dirt Mile isn't even a real division, no idea why this is a race. There are like two races all year at the distance that matter, both in New York around one turn, and this one.

They needed a break to groom the turf course.

I think there's just so many horses that don't want to run past 1 1/16 miles that they (BC) probably heard enough whining and complaining about not having spots for their horses.

most of the whining came from New York. They finally have a 2 turn 1 1/4 mile race for older horses at Saratoga after not having one for 10+ years.

It's actually worse than that.

Without the Mile you have a choice between 6F and 10F. Some very good horses are just not quick enough to get into contention at 6F and aren't going to get 10F in a race like the Classic. Most would be a big price in either race.

The real problem is the very good horses that duck the Classic because the 10F is a marginal issue or they want an easier spot (like Saint Liam).

If Precisionist and Gulch could win the Sprint, so could plenty other horses that route but aren't 10f types.

Used to look forward to those Power Sprinters cutting back. A mile is only worthwhile around 1 turn. IMHO.

Of course you mean Liam's Map! And we can add City of Light and Life is Good to that list.

A mile is a great distance for a stakes race.

It's a great test and it brings together different horses, but it's not a division.

Want to run in the championships? Choose a division.

otherwise the mile should be a $75k ungraded stake on the undercard

the 'big ass fans' sponsorship (i think has since transitioned or lowered the promotion of the name) was especially tacky

Robert Fischer...exactly. Great to watch, fun to bet, but it does seem like this race draws away from the other two Divisions.
