End of Gulfstream West? Florida allows Calder to run jai alai, keep slots

http://floridapolitics.com/archives/...g-horses-slots

Excerpts:

Quote:
It’s big news in Florida’s gambling world: The pari-mutuel facility formerly known as Calder Race Course has gotten the OK from state gambling regulators to get out of the horse racing business.

...

“Calder may operate a full schedule of jai alai performances and maintain its ‘eligible facility’ status to operate slot machine gaming,” the ruling said. Also, Calder “is not required to conduct summer jai alai performances in the state fiscal year preceding operation of slot machines as a summer jai alai licensee.”

....

Under the agreement [with TSG], Gulfstream — about 8 miles away — runs 40 races a year at Calder, the minimum number of live races required for Calder to maintain its slots license.

As of now, it doesn’t have to.
Between this precedence being set, and the amendment on the November ballot to ban greyhound racing....by this time in 2020 the only live racing in Florida could be at Gulfstream. Maybe Tampa Bay too, if they decline to jump on the jai alai wagon.

Pompano Park harness is going the same route. They have about 50 acres of prime real estate just north of Fort Lauderdale. They will build a tiny building and keep all the casino while developing the rest of the track and barn area.

The future of any racing in Florida is dim.

Next week at midnight..

They're waiting for the athletes to arrive. Six have parole hearings today and another 10 are in the Honduran Caravan.

I played there 10-15 times this winter. Have you been? The Casino has creeped the race book already. They put half a dozen table games upstairs, and spread the poker room. Horse players have the bar and the 20 tables outside.

Gulfstream is actually a nice stop. My favorite simo is PBKK. I like that place, it reminds of me of Saratoga in a way. Very small way which I will explain if anyone forces me too. PBKK is couple exits away and I'm connected to a small group of NY and Boston players that haunt the clubhouse. PLus I like seeing the greyhounds.
