12-horse fields in the rain were a pretty cruel twist of fate for someone learning on the job.

The 4th reminded me of when the Mets have a kid come on to announce an inning of a game because he won a contest.
But usually the kid practices before going on.

I love those AQU calls in the fog with about 200 feet visibility.

There is a big difference between poor visibilty and lack of talent.

It's time to release my VHS tape to Parx management then?
You know which one (see my Saratoga trip thread)

Or when Bill Veeck sent up a midget to pinch hit. Guy knew how to make people laugh. Listening to Jessica is entertaining.

Poor guy was attacked and beaten to death at 36, what kind of person would do that to a dwarf?
Interesting fact from Wiki, Because of its scarcity, Gaedel's autograph now sells for more than Babe Ruth's.

Damn, I didn’t know. Very sad end.
Bill Veeck once owned Suffolk Downs. He wrote a book called ‘30 tons a day’ Been a while since I’ve read it. The tons were in reference to the amount of manure produced daily from the horses and politicians. Great read

The strange thing I remembered Eddie Gaedel's name without looking it up, and that happened like 10 years before I was born. I have a history of concussions and am dealing with one now, they are cumulative and become easy to get in someone like me. The things I remember and don't remember don't make a lot of sense. Could be I was a hard core baseball fan as a kid and every elective book report I ever did was about baseball history.
The manager even had Gaedel's contract, and proved he was on the active roster when questioned by the home plate umpire. That stunt spawned a new rule that the commissioner had to approve all contracts. He was paid $100 for the plate appearance and jumping out of a cake.
Anything by or about Bill Veeck is a good read. A handful of rules were made to stop things he did. He was quite the character.

Just tuned into Park and noticed Jessica's not calling the races today. Did she get dumped or just needed a day off?

When Dan Loiselle retried he talked to some of us about his early years."I used to listen to tapes of my calls to see where I could improve..it takes time and when I listen to those old calls, I laugh." Paraphrasing.
