Even if there was no pandemic, the mentality entering the election would have been the same for you.

Not even close. Bob Dole, Michael Dukakis, George McGovern, Walter Mondale, Hubert Humphrey, Wendell Wilkie, Alf Landon and many others were far worse than Biden.

Public opinion is not a function of electoral votes. Public opinion is a function of real votes from real people. AS of a few minutes ago that public opinion was expressed as
Biden/Harris 74,857,880 votes
Trump/Pence 70,598,535
The four million vote differential is meaningful.
The fact that literally every Republican in the House was re-elected and GOP did well in the Senate, and state Races but Trump's loss tells you something. Both GOP and Democratic leadership need to think about that.
The GOP is fortunate to be minus Trump in the White House. Maybe some of the traditional conservatives among them can "unbite" their tongue and show some principles. For four years they've behaved like sheep-dogs with no real beliefs. The result is huge deficits even before the pandemic hit.
Conversely the Democrats must wake up and smell the coffee on dumb rhetoric. The left is right that some police departments need real reform. But those who call for "defunding" police departments are using a dumb term that invites heavy-duty ridicule from the right and the public at large. Ridicule that leaves many with the view that Democrats don't care about stopping rioters and looters.
Biden never embraced the defunding strategy. In fact he opposed it in no uncertain terms. But many Dems were too afraid to really make that clear across the board. As a result the sentiment that Dems were soft on crime and indifferent to civil disturbances stuck.
One name that deserves some thought is Pelosi. I think she did a lot of good as the Dem leader for three-plus years. But, in the last six months not so much. She had a stimulus offer from Munchin at around $2 trillion in September. Her and Schumer said no and, as a result, no voters received a penny. The smarter strategy would be to have embraced the $2 trillion while Trump seemed willing to get on boards. It would have forced O'Connell's Senate Republicans to go along or vote no potentially going against Trump. . Nancy got a little to cocky and it cost her members. Just my opinion, but sometimes making a deal is more important than playing the hard-line.

And Hillary would have done better? That's laughable on the face of it. If she was in office all of the shit still would have happened and the economy would have been far worse. I have no love for Trump -- he is a narcissistic buffoon. But to think that the Dems have a better handle on things with solid plans to get results is ridiculous (see the miracle cartoon below).
The real problem is the archaic two-party political system which is why we get idiots in the White House. Trump and Biden were the two best people to run this country? Seriously?? Just think -- in 2025 we will all be saying the 2020 wasn't so bad. God help us all.
