If they banned dunking in basketball I might start watching again.

And if they made the uniforms fit properly.

Was dunking allowed when you used to watch basketball?

They can institute this rule because they know you'll still watch.

Dunking has always been allowed.

Traveling and palming wasn't, however.

I don't know how old you are, but I was watching and playing a lot of basketball in the late 70s and those guys suck compared to todays players. I don't even want to talk about the guys from the 50s and 60s. I read a lot about Bill Russell, then I watched some old tape on the guy, and he literally couldn't score if he was more than 5 feet from the basket. So I decided to look at his numbers, He was a career 44% shooter as a center, that's almost unheard of. I don't think he could do anything but be a scrappy player in todays game.

Actually not.

From Wikipaedia:

Quote:
In January 15, 1892, James Naismith published his rules for the game of "Basket Ball" that he invented:[1] The original game played under these rules was quite different than the one played today as there was no dribbling, dunking, three-pointers, or shot clock, and goal tending was legal.
Although I can't find where dunking is specifically banned, I once read that Mr. Naismith specified the basket was to be high enough so that a player cannot shoot down at the basket. He also specified that a goal is made when a ball is thrown or batted into the basket, and stays there. So I don't know if you can dunk and have the ball stay in the basket.

Correct. it was. Dunking was banned primarily due to a guy known as Lew Alcindor (AKA Kareem Abdul Jabbar). I remember when the NCAA finals were played in College Park Md. and Sidney Wicks dunked. I believe it was then vs.Texas Western U. He was called for a tech but that dunk changed the tenure of the game. UCLA won

There is as usual more to this ruling than is being discussed. This move is purely to do with liability issues. The goal posts are being made a bit higher thus making the goal posts heavier besides being longer. A few years back a goal post came down in a college game and struck and killed a woman. Considering the large number of people on the field, the NFL would like to avoid something like that happening as the damages for a law suit would be big.

So they are outlawing dunking thru the goalposts because it may fall and bonk someone on the head?
That goal post that "came down" in a college game was ripped down by the student body, no?
I am sure it didn't fall as a result of some WR dunking over it.

I believe that is correct but did you see the highlight of the player, I think from New Orleans, that did pull the thing out of line? Add more weight to the top, as they are doing, will make it even easier to tip over. Multibillion dollar industry here that doesn't want to endanger their positions with something like this happening.
