Tricks Of The Trade: How EPO Used For Blood-Doping A Horse
---------------
Epogen has been brought illegally into horse racing but no one knows how widespread its use has been. There is anecdotal information suggesting the winners of some of horse racing’s biggest events, dating back to the early 1990s, may have been treated regularly with EPO.
---------------
Tests for human use of EPO were not developed until 2000, though Lance Armstrong – who never tested positive for the drug – showed that athletes could routinely escape detection. Horse racing developed an EPO test a dozen years later, but it’s fair to assume unethical veterinarians and trainers have learned how to beat the system.

An owner or trainer that has or had a horse that the potential of being
worth millions and a stud career , has to be insane to use a dangerous
drug like this .
It wouldn't surprise me to find some seedy barns that would but not
the big popular ones . In fact I don't expect it in average barns .
Only a pea brained low life would inject a horse with this . Epogen is only used on humans with severe anemia to avoid transfusions .
What they could have doe with Armstrong if suspicious , they should have
checked his hemoglobin daily and stat . They likely would have found
gradual increases . The jackass is lucky he didn't damage his organs .

the way the game is structured these days lends to trainers using all types of methods to get horses to run fast other than good solid training methods.
i know trainers that don't use anything and still win the old fashioned way. when something is wrong with the horse, the horse is on the bench recovering and never seeing needles, pills, cobault or shock waves.
if you don't do anything about allowing owners to race as many horses as they want and trainer's to train as many horses as some do now, you will only get more of the same with decreasing fan interest. put limits on their rosters and the game has a good shot to rise to the top again.
this week at OBS we have buyer's from all over the world bidding up horses to run in their countries that do have limits on the number of horses one entity can own and trainer's can train.

The test for EPO was developed years ago - they actually test for the presence of anti-bodies, I believe.

Why doesn't the horse's body create antibodies to the synthetic version like it does to Epogen? Who makes the synthetic version?

Treat an infection with time but not antibiotics?
Treat a soft tissue injury with time but not anti-inflammatories?
Treat a back issue with time and not muscle relaxers?
So only use time to fix problems, and eliminate proven medications and therapies even if they are used in a totally legal, legitimate and moral way? I think not.
