I don't know Rick at all. I'm not interested in weighing in on this, save to say I believe in second chances. I do know, firsthand, a story about him that few will ever know that speaks extremely well of him. That doesn't mean he didn't make mistakes.

Yes they were legal. However IMO what got Dutrow in hot water was the flippant way he suggested on National TV that since he hadn't been treated that time was the reason BIG BROWN was so pathetic in the Belmont.
The powers that be can and have overlooked alot over the years.
But when you give a big FU to the industry and more importantly the betting public with statements like that. It's NEVER going to get overlooked.
I'm in complete agreement about 2nd chances.
Many trainers have done far less and been welcomed back in much shorter time.
Being stupid shouldn't come with a life sentence. If it did I would have been put in maximum security long ago.

Dutrow's ban ended a while back, yet we haven't heard anything about his applying for a new license anywhere. Maybe he has submitted an application, and we are waiting for a scheduled racing commission meeting for it to be acted upon? His star was just beginning to peak as I was getting out of the sport for a while.
I thought of it today because we have David Jacobson bringing 3 from NY out to Oaklawn tomorrow. Jacobson had HIS own license revoked in 1981, just as I was getting into the sport in New York, and he didn't wind up training again untll after I took my hiatus from the sport in 2006. He went on to lead the NYRA trainer standings in 2012-14. Then he retired again just as I came back to the sport in 2019 here in Arkansas. Now he's come back again as of the end of last year, and our paths will finally intersect tomorrow.

Maybe he can claim someone, do some dental and back work, and beat Repo Rocks.

Dutrow's rap sheet of racing offenses totals at least 75 infractions spread out over multiple jurisdictions. In addition to his troubles with equine medication violations, his sanctions over the decades include multiple penalties for personal drug use, check forgery, falsified applications, failing to report a criminal conviction, plus various license refusals for “moral turpitude,” “evidence of unfitness,” and attempts to “deceive state racing officials.”

After reading that I'm not sure if he should be a trainer or a candidate for America's Most Wanted.

But for some reason he has been the Patron Saint of banned trainers, like the game was somehow suffering without him. I'll never get it.

I won't go as far as to say I'm glad he's back, but the man has definitely served his time.

Feel like he was unfairly targeted and there were some shady circumstances surrounding some of his so called violations..Im also a firm believer in second chances and 10 years is a long time...wish him the best...edit..if the likes of peter miller, jamie freaking ness and and the GOAT are allowed on the backstretch why shouldn't he?
