Elton John: Good, Bad, Great, or Indifferent?

A long and distinguished career, Elton has never shied from controversy.

His Greatest Hits needed 3 albums.

I used to think he was the British Billy Joel (and that's either a vicious insult or great compliment depending on your POV) but Bernie Taupin's songwriting was a cut above that. Not really my cup of tea musically---I can't imagine listening to an Elton album front to back---but hard to deny Elton's talent, showmanship, or 50-year career.

Was lucky, in a sense, to have that one lyricist who stuck by him and could help provide vision for his albums, as I don't think Elton would have handled a separate-but-equal band situation too well.

A vicious insult. Never understood the love for Billy Joel, and I really don't understand why his music is considered part of the rock genre. Joel's stuff is pop at best and lounge music at its worst. His music always reminds me of this:

Oh, and I vote Great for Sir Elton.

Good....he had a great voice, put on a great show, was very genuine.

But he did not write any of his own stuff. Puts it in a difference class to me in comparison to even say Billy Joel, who did write stuff.

Huh? Elton wrote the music; he didn't write the lyrics. And I will put up his best again Joel's best any day of the week. Joel is a better piano player, but he is waaaaaaaaaaaay overated as a songwriter. He should stick to writing tavern songs like Piano Man.

I think liking him includes liking Bernie T. His early stuff was amazing, he did become somewhat of a caricature of himself and his music is so overplayed but there are many gems:

The lyrics are a big part of his music, lol.

Its fine that we disagree.

I get it, I do.

Though if you strip away the lyrics musically its really nothing special. I could come up with dozens of non lyrical bands that the music was much better.

I stand by that he was a Good artist in my book.

Hmmm...really. Name your best Billy Joel tune and I can name 20+ Elton John songs that are better musically and lyrically.

Give me the ones where Elton wrote the lyrics and music....or else its like Sinead O Conner to me with Nothing Compares to U. Cant give the man the same credit. Its nothing personal, certainly nothing anti gay or any thing.

Come on. He did help in the writing a bit.

At the end of the day, he played and sung the songs, and was an incredible performer. There are very few entertainers as good as Elton John.
