Mouse question

I have an XP computer with a PS/2 mouse installed.
It is giving me problems being hard to move it side to side and point so I bought a USB mouse replacement.

Tried to to use it last night, but computer is not seeing it, even with PS/2 unplugged.

Do I have to uninstall the old mouse first to get it to look past that device?

Thanks

XP should recognize both and should actually work with both installed. Try uninstalling in device manager and have it search for new devices. Restart maybe, but should just work after you plug it in. Reboot should work unless something else is going on.

Even mice die Tom.
Seriously speaking, Logitech with unifying software work good on XP. I have a K400 keyboard with a M325 Mouse working on a XP machine with a logitech dongle

Tom, did you try Vegasone's solution?

It's also a remote possibility that it needs driver software.

I haven't tried rebooting yet - too busy handicapping!
Will tonight.

Supposed to be a plug and go mouse.

In the world of MicroSoft, that means plug and go crazy.

P.S. MicroSoft issued an XP patch 2 days ago. Lots of potential for problems lurking there.

Seeing how it is MS, I have to ask, problems that are corrected, or problems WITH the patch?

Adapter

Tom,

You might need a USB to PS/2 connector.

I had to use an adapter like this on my old XP machine years ago.

Thanks, Ken.
That looks familiar - I might have one in my junk box.

Tom,
I've never cared for the USB mouse's, although do use one with my laptop (rarely use that machine).

I also prefer the old roller ball types.

Most mouse issues may be resolved with a good cleaning. They tend to accumulate lint or hairy-material on the rollers. The ball also gets dirt.

Frequently when I remove the PS connection and attempt to reconnect, I've found that the connector fails to seat properly. Disconnect and reconnect (note; must be down while machine is off and requires re-booting).

I cleaned it pretty - nothing visible in there. The internal rollers seem to be free and spin easily.

I pulled out the P/2 and put it back in without booting and it worked.
USB won't.

I ordered an adapter like Ken suggested - be here this week.
