Hi Edge,

If you're interested in Benter and his career, you might do a search on this site, since there have been, understandably, many threads about him. Not long ago I posted the well-known article from ERTM, and some time back someone posted a video of lecture he gave to a group of mathematicians in Hong Kong. Although he may have made amounts of the kind you mention on occasion, $50-100 million per annum seems to have been the range of his profits for over a decade in Hong Kong. Still not bad.

To add to what Lansdale said: "... even at HK dollar ratio of about 1/7 of USD, that is still a LOT of money."

I believe he is attributed with winning over 2b HK dollars over time.

Ya' know - I read these stories about these mega players who make gazillions of dollars betting horses, and I seriously feel a bit sorry for them.
No foolin'...
You see - they aren't handicappers....they are computer or math whizzes who let their software analyze markets for inefficiencies. Then they bet various denominations and crush it....or something like that

But these guys just don't know the absolute joy of having things unfold just as you surmised, and taking down a nice score.
Yeah yeah yeah - sooner or later in life it's about the money...heard that.

BUT - I am not in this game to make a living. I make my living money elsewhere and play the horses simply because I love it.
The fun and thrills would be gone if I had to pick winners to pay the house note...my job isn't what I would call fun.
So on I play; for the thrill of victory and some extra spending cash...and the supreme satisfaction of beating this game.

Preach on brother!

I have a 9 to 5 that pays the bills and allows me to play the ponies. I'm certainly not an influencer of odds in any race, but I definitely wager more than the Average Joe when I play. And I feel very confident that I know more than 80% of those that throw money into the wagering pool on any given race.

Can I beat a computer or a Professional? Not likely, and certainly not in the long run. The real honesty in it is that I'm not in the game to support myself. And I'm not sure I would like to scratch out a living with the stress and time it takes to do it professionally. I am strictly wagering from a competitive standpoint, and the challenge of my mental faculties and handicapping skills.

I don't know any "whales" but, there is at least one forum member who
I think qualifies. I recall reading a newspaper article on him and I think seeing a 60 minutes or TV piece (late 90's or early 2000's). A NV casino provided him a private room, phones, monitors and other tools of the trade. I recall he liked exactas and other exotics and he handicapped without using a computer.

I was surprised when he joined in one of the discussions here. I haven't seen his handle (which was his name) in quite some time. I wish he would jump in every once in awhile. I'd like to ask him some questions.
