Great documentary on General Pershing

Here is a link to an outstanding documentary about General Pershing:

Highly recommended!

He is being forgotten. He might be the greatest general in U.S. history, but because he served in WWI not much is known about him. He is not as famous as Generals, Grant, Lee, Eisenhower and others.

Thanks for posting this. I have made a note to find the movie on Amazon Prime the next time I'm there and put it on my watch list.

Just watched it. It's free if you've got Amazon Prime.

Very good show.

Ya think so?

I'll certainly have to check it out. I've always rated him as an above average commander with a long and influential service history.

Thanks for posting.

I enjoyed it. I didn't know much about him, if anything, really. There is a street in my hometown named Pershing Avenue. I know that in the past it crossed my mind if it was named after General Pershing, but I never really gave it much thought. Then I saw this documentary and realized that it almost certainly was named after him. He must have been a legend in his time. It's amazing how quickly we forget.

I believe the documentary said he was America's only serving 6 star general.

One thing I found particularly interesting was that he commanded Native American and African American soldiers.

He got his nickname "Black Jack" because of the African American soldiers he led.

Yeah sorta. Ranks were weird. 5 Stars didn't exist until WWII in the traditional sense. Pershing was "above" them so...

The promotions to 5 Star were mostly pomp and circumstance for dealing with our allies.

Interesting figure though. Winfield Scott is another.

Interesting. I know very little about military history, although, this documentary has got me interested in learning more.

I've read Winston Churchill's books about history and found them pretty interesting.

I tried reading "The Rise and Fall of the Roman Empire", but the writing style didn't hold my interest.

I've watched most of Ken Burn's documentary about Vietnam, but missed a few episodes when it was on public TV for free so I never finished it. I tried watching his Civil War doc, but it is so long that it is hard for me to 1.) have time to finish it, and 2.) stay interested.

One of my favorite books about American Military history is "Undaunted Courage" about the Lewis and Clark expedition. Fascinating story.

Maritime history is really my big thing. I'd suggest you check out Last Flag Down. It's the story of the Confederate raider CSS Shenandoah. The author takes a bit of liberty on his take of the crew but overall accurate without actually reading through the actual logs if the crew.

Reading history books is always interesting as there are the narrative variety and those where the author is espousing some hypothesis. The above is the former.

Ambrose's works are enjoyable. Americans At War is a fun quick read in particular.

I'll check out your Pershing documentary tonight.

Bumping this back up.

I liked the documentary quite a bit.

Currently watching the First World War on prime. It's a good series covering a lot of ground.

Thanks for the tip about WWI. I don't know nearly as much about that one as WWII, Civil War, and War for Independence. (And I know very little about those.)

So it will be good to learn some more about WWI.
