WW, I think the kids are alright. If they can't watch horses run at ACRC, most are never going to see a live horse race IMO. That's not going to help anything.

I agree with you about the wide open fields. It's a crapshoot but there is significant reward if you get it right.

For the record, I went to AC on Saturdays in the '60's when there were 35,000 fans and I was there near the end when it was a ghost town. One thing never changed. That turf course is absolutely awesome! It's Breeders' Cup ready and that's no lie.

Very much agree About the top not turf course....I'm a little hesitant to say its as good as it was in its prime.....for some reason I've seen a lot of horses blow turns and wonder how much care that course gets over the course of the year...

It's amazing that they can maintain such a good course that sits dead for 359 days a year....but to go there in dead of winter with nobody there and then it comes to life for 1 weeks is pretty cool...

And yes the kids are ok there it's not thier fault people abandoned going there if they raced any more days it would lose the novelty there

Hope to see some of you guys there!!!

I plan to be there at least one of the days. Never been there before and I live 95 miles away in central Jersey. I just wish it was a longer meet.

I will try to get a bet in. The last time I bet on an Atlantic City race, it was on a horse ridden by Julie Krone, who won an Aqueduct race earlier in the day.

The Pools on sat and sun will be basically on track handle with people there cutting the grass instead of betting...And there really won't be many tv screens with the ac feed on over the weekend with all the tracks racing at off track locations....

And just like every year you will read the press articles about the local crowd wanting more racing but this is coming from the same people that abandoned going to the track back when track was on verge of going down the drain....

In my opinion the track next week should be off limits to the people bringing there kids and just taking up space in the building and out on the apron....nobody needs there $4 handle for the day being drunk and getting loud

The older crowd and myself that go there for simulcasting instead of putting money through the casino simulcasts are the reason they have the 6 day stand

So if people wanna see fake racing fans head out to acrc next week and you will see fake in a nutshell.....the 12 year old kids that ask there parents why they only race 6 days and this racing is pretty cool there parents can tell them that 12 years ago they didn't appreciate the racing!!!!

Rant over....see you guys there next weekend...

If anybody can share a way how to post pix on iPhone on this forum please tell me id love to post pix of the meet last year and I'll post for this year
Email the pics to yourself then post them here as attachments.

It's actually pretty easy to take care of bluegrass and fescue there.
The ACRC turf course is one or the other. Or a blend of both. Bluegrass is not as able to withstand the pounding of horses. Fescue can. Bluegrass is more tolerant to direct sunlight than Fescue.
It's a cool damp climate. Ideal for those types of turf grass.
All they have to do is keep it irrigated, regular fertilization, weed and pest control and good mowing practices.

Mapquest says a 202 mile drive one-way.

I'm thinking seriously about making a day trip, but not sure which day.

I think the last time I was there was for one of the all-turf days, but I can't remember. I do remember being there in the late 1980's when they were still racing on their dirt track.

Best move would be come down on the moday stay and enjoy ac casinos then head to the track early the next day.....being a Monday night you would have no problem finding a place in a casino for under 50....

On tip is bring binocs very hard to make out what's going on if your outside especially when they are in clubhouse turn it's very hard to see from the angle cus there's a split in the grandstand that you can't be on right hand side of the track

It works. Just use your lap top..I posted an image of the Travers Day 1978 Program using this method.
Patience my friend.
Oh, you can skip the emailing part if you bring along your USB cable for your phone and simply load the pics from your phone to your lap top. Your home charger cord should be a USB cable as well.

Depends on where you are coming from. Points south( Baltimore/DC) UGH!!! The traffic would make me into a candidate for an insane asylum.
Anyway, have fun. Wish I could go during the meet.

Definitely a good idea for the Monday night stay and Tuesday day at the track. Driving over 3 hours is a drain and you can handicap better when you are fresh.

As for the condition of the Grandstand, it is poor. They have basically painted over old broken cement and run down walls. Their is usually a trailer outside that they use for extra bathrooms.

The inside bathrooms are totally run down. Sinks do not work, urinals do not work, etc. They usually have a 40 year old fan blowing in the bathroom that makes a ton of noise and does not even move the air.

They have to supply water to the patrons with a cooler because their fountains stopped working 15 years ago.

All of the track maintenance tools for the main track were sold off when they first "closed". They cannot even get the main track in race condition if there is a monsoon. This is the one track in the world where the races will never come off the turf.

The guy who maintains the turf course does a great job with very little help. It isn't as easy as mowing the lawn and any empty patches need to be addressed quickly. He constantly walks the track looking for and fixing problems.

The reports of 10,000 people being there are vastly exaggerated. Back when they were really open, those who were there for big days saw what 15,000 people were like. Back then they had the clubhouse open and the upper 2 floors of the Grandstand. You could barely move.

Now they have just the first floor Grandstand open. If they even had 5,000 people there, you could not move. On the days they "estimate" 10,000 there is plenty of room to move and the betting lines are not even 10 deep.

But it makes for nice press, so they continue to "estimate" big crowds. In reality there is about 3,000 on weekdays and about 5,000 on their busiest day if they count everyone who comes in for simulcasting and those with a few kids who come in for pony rides and then leave.

It is free admission, so there are many curiosity seekers coming to see if the track is really open. One day last year if you divided the on track attendance by the on track handle, it worked out to something like $14 per person. LOL!

To get to the Announcers booth you need to take the old elevator from the clubhouse dining room and go up the back cat walk. If you can sneak into that area you can have a great view on the side of the Announcers booth. The stewards are also on that level and there usually is at least one betting machine up there.

Well worth going for the full fields and great turf racing. Try to avoid the cracks in the cement and watch out for the young kids picking up little cement pieces and tossing them around.

Njcurveball nailed everything in that post.....very funny about the 40 year old fan cuz it def saw opening day of the tracks first meet!!!!

As for the announcers booth was up there with Larry lederman last year it was a blast......the view was out of this world and I have pix but I can't do it from my iPhone....

And also another way to get up up the booth/upstairs if u go by the bathroom look to the left you will see a door towards wall....above the door you will see the ancient "on air" sign above....this place is absolutely classic and I wouldn't have the heart to walk around the upstairs at night I think they even filmed a movie there a few years back.....

The place is just absolutely classic....would love to see the jockeys room there what it looks like and walk through the tunnel...

As Larry lederman told me the place could survive anything... Maybe the reason they don't knock the place down is because they can't physically knock it down!!!! 6 day to post!!

Just got back from Acrc cuz I gotta drive 20 min out there just to get a harness book for tonite and they don't yet know who is calling the races whether it's Larry lederman or the self concieted whose better then anybody else keith jones...mr jones is the person that threw a hissy fit when he was out of town in Xmas eve and they called Larry to call the races.....Keith jones in the biggest primadonna in horse racing

I hope Larry is calling the races because he's one of the good guys in horse racing

Was talking to him last year and it was amazing how he carried himself while battling brain cancer.......I was telling him how my mother died of the same thing 20 years ago and how much technology has come in helping.....all this around the same time Gary carter was losing his battle....

I think he is going on close to 3 or 4 years with this disease and he even jokes that he is like 2cm away from being healthy....that's pretty much all you need to know about him....sense of humor in scary times
