Check out the dvd of The Who documentary, "The Kids are Alright". There is a part where John Entwistle's bass playing is isolated and everything else is turned down so you can hear just the bass..............AMAZING !
I love The Who. What a great band! Even their newest cd "Endless Wire" is better than most anything out there today. It's just hard to live up to the performances they had back in the day with Entwistle and Moon, but Daltrey and Townshend are still incredible.
If you get a chance to see them live....GO ! You will love it!

His bass solo in "My Generation" is amazing.

Did you catch the Simpson's last night?
HOMER became a Bass man and formed a cover band with Apu as the singer!

Another great jazz electric bass player is Stanley Clark. He also played bass on "Silly Love Songs" in McCartney's movie "Give My Regards to Broad Street".

I saw Stanley Clark a long time ago. Technically, he was amazing.

I agree about Entwistle. I don't know much about jazz bassists, but Pino Palladino was the the first guy to play bass for The Who after Entwistle. Palladino's bass playing on Paul Young's song Everytime You Go is great. Another good rock bass player was Jack Bruce (Cream) who just passed away. McCartney, of course, is a very original bass player who is often copied.

My favorite bass players in clubs are always guys like homer who rest the bass on top of their big gut!
Flea from the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Ryan Martinie from Mudvayne my two fave bass players
