Sorry for bumping the old topic, i could start a new one instead if you want me to, i know people get panties in a bunch when an old topic gets bumped to the top.
Anyway, on yesterday's (Aug 18) Stein show, Roger absolutely DESTROYED Todd Schrupp and TVG. The 'rant' starts at about the 12 minute mark.

Does this kind of stuff make you happy?
When people get DESTROYED, to use your term. I must conclude it does, since you ALLCAPPED the word DESTROYED.
Enjoy your victory.

for those few of you who care or want to know, BETTOR BOB PASSED
AWAY last week in vegas. He was in declining health and was in his
early 80s. Bob was an anomaly in the gambling media segment, as he
really supported himself and built his bankroll by actually gambling
100% of the time. He was the original linemaker for putting up Cubs home
game totals before anyone else. when cubs totals became mainstream,
he and his partners were some the largest bettors of them on the street.
After WSEX lost large amounts of money booking horse matchups, he was
offered the job and did nothing but make them money once he got involved.
He was a large horse matchup bettor up until his death and in addition a large player at some of the smaller tracks offering carryovers on the Super Hi 5. He was an honorable man and can only be described as a dinosaur in the gambling business. For those few who knew him, he will surely be missed.

I did not know of this man, but men of honor always leave a void.
Sorry for the loss of your friend.

Huh? WSEX went under screwing a lot of people out of a lot of money, my friend got burned for $10k. I think I would leave that statement out of your remembrance of the guy. They basically became nothing but a Ponzi scheme. They were in business for years after they started screwing people who made large hits over.

No mention of Roger Stein's death in this thread? He died May 31st 2019. I just remember him mostly as a dominate harness trainer at Los Alamitos.

WSEX ended up owing BOB money too.
They were not a ponzi scheme, but a successful
bookmaking business that was run by non professional
bookmakers that overestimated their bookmaking and
management skills. This eventually lead them to get in
way over their heads ruining that business and hurting
not only themselves, but their employees and customers.
that is another story and certainly not for this thread.
Roger and Bob did not part on the best of terms, but very
few of Roger's collaborations ever did. that's why I only
made passing reference to it here, no need to besmirch
the dead.

Thanks for the update. I used to listen to the show all the time.
My condolences.

i can tell you he prepared a lot for the show and loved
doing it. he must of really loved it as Roger's total
compensation to Bob in over a decade was a laptop,
a signed copy of Roger's book, and an invite (at Bob's)
expense to come to so cal and meet some lucky listeners.

i left out a few pertinent points. i'll let this thread go after this
unless there are any questions or if i see any misinformation
one of the key differences between BETTOR BOB and almost
everyone else in the horse media is that they have a vested
financial interest in promoting themselves or a product.
Bob was the only person I was aware of who had no chance of
any financial benefit by being on the radio, unless a guest or a cohost
said something insightful that he could use as intellectual property
or information. that happened very very infrequently.
Bob also was a call in on some of the radio shows in vegas. His
insights were appreciated, but his bias and overall disdain for
the parimutuel system occasionally came through which was
not well received by the advertisers (racetracks). This certainly
limited his appeal to his hosts although Roger, to his credit, found
a way of working with Bob without losing his sponsors. I do recall
Bob said he got into a long on air argument in Vegas with some guy who
wrote a horse handicapping/history book that Bob thought was BS.
As mentioned, Bob was not a huge fan of parimutuel due to its high takeouts.
Most of his bets were matchups, exchange wagers, offshore, or futures. Always seeking an edge, most of his parimutuel bets were done into super hi 5 carryover pools at smaller tracks (no jackpot pools). Many of his parimutuel bets at Vegas racebooks were done under very specific guidelines into minus show pools. as you can imagine that did not make him popular with the casinos as they had to eat their end of a minus pool. Bob was barred or severely limited in his wagering at multiple Vegas sports and race books because of this and other wagers that tended to produce a profit.
Hope this thread was interesting. It's been helpful to me to share some
of Bob's history with a horse racing forum that many can appreciate the insights and some still remember him.
