Important topic, and it deserves a more noticeable thread title...IMO.

If they let the people of the state of NY vote on this that money would be gone and the horse industry would die a slow or not so slow death. Look at what happened with dog racing in Florida ....they put banning it in the hands of voters and almost 70% voted to end racing. Horses of course garner much more respect and many more workers in that industry so the importance of keeping that money is vital. If they don’t the take out percentages would go up and PMW would end up going extinct.

This is the endgame everywhere that slots fuel purses. Horse racing lobbies for slots/sports betting, once that foundation is laid it’s over because there too much money for it to be unnoticeable. The slots won’t go away and at then the end of the day there are even less horse players because some have shifted attention and betting dollars to slots. The politics wins out and horse racing is in an even worse position than it was in before slots because the slot money is gone and gamblers have other legal spots to wager

Horsemen don’t want to hear it but the solution is for each state to run less dates during boutique meets, let the simulcast money to build during dark days, and run for huge purses during those boutique meets on betting dollars solely tied to horse racing. The unsustainable path is a ton of race dates with purses fuels by non-racing dollars. The slots purses in the interim give animal rights activists fuel because the glut of race dates incentivizes the running of unsound and poorly bred horses

Yeah sorry about that . I rarely post a thread and forgot to add a title at first. I don’t care if Pace changes it. Kind of screwed that up. Cause it is big if these two get this thru. The main thing is how many of them go for it. I imagine upstate here it will get shot down by many. It’s all in the vote counting. Plus, it’s important NOT to have negative news come out which just bolsters the pitch forks and torches.

It sounds to me like the critical issue is whether you call the money subsidies or compensation, but either way I doubt this is going anywhere, at least in the short term. Long term, lots of people have been warning that an industry model dependent on slot revenue was very short sighted and could be at risk.

The_Turf_Monster,

+1 on your post.

Give a listen to Steve Byk's show from this morning with Pat McKenna from NYRA to understand this a little more.
