Dilemma: Del Mar or Wrigley Field

Ok, I’m having a little dilemma. I have heard about the pleasures of Del Mar and was strongly thinking about doing a weekend there (especially since I am a huge Saratoga fan and would love to do a personal comparison.) However, I am also a baseball fan and always wanted to go to Wrigley Field. Mind you I have never been to either place and both are on my “bucket list”, but I can only do one.

I know that Del Mar is more laid back, but would an objective racing fan partial to Saratoga be able to enjoy Del Mar? I know it’s a completely different vibe.

I’m figuring that there are a number of you that also like other sports so I’d love to hear your opinions. I’m also sure that there are a few of you who have been to both places and would love to hear your insight. Thanks so much!

Wrigley may not be what you expect, it and the neighborhood have changed a lot since Ricketts took over. Just food for thought

Del Mar is great. I didn't get there until after I'd been to Saratoga many times. If I had to pick one now, which luckily I don't, I'd pick Del Mar. I'm 54 so that probably has something to do with it. I also love the beach which is literally right next to the track.

I did Wrigley many years ago. It was ok, but in the end it is just a baseball stadium really. I don't have the love for baseball I did as a kid so that probably plays into it for me. I do want to get back to Chicago for more than a few days but personally I'd choose Del Mar every time. Plus, you could take in a Padres game and see a good team.

Nothing beats an afternoon at Del Mar followed by swimming in the Pacific. Love Del Mar.

In baseball terms:

If you are the kind of person who prefers Fenway Park to Dodger Stadium, you will prefer Wrigley (and Saratoga).

Keep in mind, that you are on a Racing Forum, You would get different answers on a Baseball Forum. Both are great. At least you won't get rained out at Del Mar.

Thank you for all your responses. Right now leaning towards Del Mar as that would be more fun (to be honest) and I can go twice to the races! Plus the beach during the AM and I can catch Angels and Padres games too (the Angels play the Yankees and since I’m a Mets fan I can root hard for the Angels.)

Actually Del Mar does rain out. LOL. Doesn’t seem right though, horses have been running in slop forever.

Don't forget about the Del Mar/Los Al double header!

I'd normally say Del Mar, not being as into baseball as I was as a young'un.

But I'd now vote for Wrigley **AND** a side trip to Arlington before it disappears. It's a gem, even if the racing is not what it was.

As someone who went to DelMar probably hundreds of times from 1980-2000. I would suggest going there. It is a small venue so best to avoid big events.
I was there when Cigar lost his bid to win 17 straight in the Pacific Classic
over 40,000 there made the place like Churchill Downs on Derby day.

If you like seafood this is a great place to eat after the races, it is right at the entrance to the track:

For a double header 40 miles south the old Agua Caliente thoroughbred track still has a sportsbook and night time dog races. You didn't when I went but you need a passport to go into Mexico. It is best to just park and walk across and take a cab. It used to cost $5 to get to the track, probably $10 now. Driving in Tijuana is not for the faint of heart and having USA plates makes you a mark for the corrupt cops, also USA car insurance is not valid in Mexico.
