One of the very,very few former pitchers to be a successful manager.The fact that he wasn't a very successful pitcher may have had something to do with that.

Between he and Alston, the Dodgers had their field manager in place for over 50 years. His running out on the field after Gibby's homer, and dodging (no pun intended) that smoked line drive down the 3rd base line are two of the finest baseball visuals of the late 80s/early 90s.

Gotta love this guy, and some of his interviews were legendary too. Here he talked about facing Hank Bauer, said "His face looked like it could hold two days of rain." Have to see if YT has any of his bluer interviews, pretty hilarious.
