Excel drag and drop cells

Say I have the number 1 in cell A1.
If I select the cell and drag it down, I will 1,2,3,........all in column A.

If I have and X in cell A1 and do the same, I get X,X,X,X....all in column A

Dates and number advance by 1 unit, but test stays the same.
I want to drag and drop a date, but keep it the same date, not advance. Is there way to turn off the repeat function? I an only find how to allow or not allow drag and drop.

Thanks

I have excel 2010 and can only speak to that version. If I understand coeectly what you want to do is to enter a date in A1 and copy it down and not have the date change. I just tried it by putting a date in A1 of my spreadsheet and copied it down without any change in date. Is the initial cell formatted as a date?

In Excel 2007 when you drag down a date there is an AutoFill options button that appears the the lower right corner of the last cell you dragged to. Click the button and then select the Copy Cells option. I don't know if this works in later versions of Excel. It should, but this is a M$ product so who knows.

Try this: Under options, advanced, "show paste options button when content is pasted" needs to be checked.

Hold down the Ctrl key while you drag and drop.
