Chris Larmey of the Sport of Kings and Bet With the Best podcast and on the NHC Players' Committee has put together a color coded chart with good/bad takeouts across North America.

Just looking at the pdf... I understand Kentucky Downs increased their take by 1% across the board. It just seems irrational to "boycott" them when they're providing full fields of 12 on the turf for a single week out of the year.
I mean... the guy codes ever single one of their bets green and at the same time says boycott.
Forget the takeout - Kentucky Downs needs to fix their run up distances.

Are these rates actually reasonable for the common 7 horse fields we're seeing these days?
I'm honestly not sure if this is political... but it reminds me of stamps. How can you charge me 49 cents to mail a letter down the street to my next door neighbor? While at the same time charge me the same price to mail a letter to Alaska? Charles Ponzi would be laughing his ass off at forever stamps.
This isn't rocket surgery.
Should the takeout be 17% for a 12 horse field on the turf? should we boycott Kentucky Downs because of a 1% hike?
If there was only 6 horses entered... that's half of a race.
Should the take be 8.5%? Obv my post is absurd... or is it?

Some of the distress is based on the fact that KD is swimming in money now, and was able to do another big increase in purses, yet had to also increase the takeout.
He's not the only one railing at Kentucky Downs for the increase. Me - I find it funny that both Keeneland a few years ago, and Kentucky Downs now, get railed at for increases, while all the CDI owned tracks maintain the HIGHEST takeout in the state, and nobody's calling for boycotts of them (except me, every time a KD boycott is mentioned )
I'm happy to get mad at Kentucky Downs (because no, I don't think they were right to increase the take), as long as people are ALSO getting mad at Churchill Downs!!!

Exactly! I'm on board with your logic.
Truth be told... I woke up on the wrong side of the bed this morning. Neighbor's kid graduated high school and they had all her friends over for a party. One of them slashed my spare tire with a knife and I had to yell at my neighbor.
So I maybe just going off on the track takeouts a bit bc I'm pissed off.
I swear I have no clue what's going on in this world anymore.

I wonder if the increase is their response to penny breakage.

I'm with you there. As many issues as racing might have it's still a comforting refuge and escape from the madness and downward spiral that lives on outside of the racing bubble. Hope your holiday weekend improves.

Don't forget
- the jackpot/rainbow type of 'single winnner' or carryover bets tend to be terrible, but occasionally good on the mandatory payout day.
- and there are some wagers that increase takeout when there is a carryover
example = 15% on pick 6 with no carryover 25% with carryover (at NYRA tracks)

Thanks MJC. Appreciate it. Oddly it helps knowing I'm not the only one losing their mind at how mental things are these days.
