At the time I thought Mastery was a true Triple Crown threat, even better than American Pharaoh.

I believe you are talking about Materiality.
Really nice horse. He was 3-0 heading into the Derby. Got the 3 hole, a bad start and rough trip. Closed from 17th to 6th against a damn good field. In the Belmont, AP put him to bed pretty early though and that was the last we saw of him.
That was a great crop though: Pharoah, Firing Line, Dortmund, Frosted, Materiality, Keen Ice, Mubtahiij, Carpe Diem, Ocho Ocho Ocho, Bolo, War Story, Upstart. That was a really good KY Derby field.

Thanks!, I have been diagnosed with "brain fog" due to having Covid and a concussion concurrently. Not sure if that one would have came to mind eventually or not. It is weird, I will see someone on TV or hear a song on the radio. I will think "who is that?" At that moment I will have no idea, then a couple hours or days later it will come to me.

Agreed I think Hoist the Flag would have been very good for quite a bit of time.

I looked him up, a little before my time, Cruguet said he was the best horse he ever rode. Secretariat got me following horse racing.

Wish I could post photos of my two visits to him at Claiborne. Even have video of our (groom and myself) feeding him peppermints..also the shot of him cribbing on the fence that I sent to Mrs.to Tweedy

No Palace, I meant Mastery. Trained by Bob Baffert and ridden by Mike Smith.
Here's Mastery's last race, winning the San Felipe Stakes by open lengths. Sadly Mastery pulled up bad and had to be retired.

You're right. Got hooked on the whole AP year.
Mastery was fast. Really fast. 4 for 4. Great call.

It's hard not to think what could've been if Forte had been able to run in this year's Derby and/or Preakness.

The competition has definitely been made out to be weak.

I heard that he said that also, but I find it hard to believe he really believes that Hoist The Flag was better than Seattle Slew. Of course Slew moved up a bit at 4 under Cordero, but SS was ridiculous right from the start of his career. He was getting left, rushing up, raced on a bad rail, and was winning with a ton in reserve even before his Champagne blowout. His Derby field was suspect, but very few horses I have ever seen would have won with that trip. That horse was insane. How many other horses have that much brilliant speed and also have the stamina reserves to come again at 12F (against Exceller no less) after a savage duel. Maybe one?
