Oh no. He really made a big splash early in his 3 year old season, and he broke the streak of favorites losing in the Derby.

I've been really busy as of late, but saw that Discreet Cat had to be put down at the age of 20. https://www.thoroughbreddailynews.co...ized-in-japan/

This was back when Saeed bin Suroor was the only trainer for Godolphin if my memory serves. Every once in a while I'll watch the Cigar Mile replay to hear Durkin.

The best part... was the post race interview with very young members of the godolphin team that flew out to see him run at the AQU. (part of the royal family)

They were really excited to see him run saying how he was a Class horse....
they actually FLEW out to visit the Aqueduct. blew my mind

On another note: my Uncle's friend gifted me Silver Trains horse shoe from this cigar mile. Is was Christmas time.... and I opened a wraped box.. and BAM! Silver Trains shoe... I still have it. Probably the coolest racing item I own.

RIP big man

I went to visit him at Kentucky Horse Park a few years ago. He looked great. I have some pictures of him. He was a big star there. RIP

I really wanted Funny Cide to win the Triple Crown, because the breeding industry could not get its hands on him and a gelding TC winner might go on to have a long career.

I have only strengthened that conviction in light of what happened with the Pharoah and especially Justify.

Sad to hear.
He closed out his racing career in the Wadsorth at Finger Lake, which he won eqasily.

When turned for home, swung out, and rallied resoluyely, pop from the crowd
was deafening, and the floor shook fron 11,000+ jumped to ther feet.

11,000 at FL is like sellig ut Yankee Stadium, or Times Square on
New Year's Eve.

I believe that was the last "big" race the late Ross Morton called.

I wanted Funny Cide to win the Triple Crown so I could see a Triple Crown winner.

However, thanks to the brilliant exercise rider Robin Smullen, who made sure to disparage all other exercise riders after the Derby because he was notoriously difficult to handle in the morning ("no one has been on him...but me."), it didn't happen.

Funny Cide ran off with Smullen on the Tuesday before the Belmont, scorching 5 furlongs in :57+. Bobby Frankel, who trained Empire Maker, was reportedly very happy with the work. Barclay Tagg...not so much.

Tagg waved the press off with a disingenuous "It was a little faster than I wanted..."; my guess is his real reaction to the rider back at the barn was something along the lines of "See you next Tuesday..."

I didn't know that. Smullen was dating Tagg, right?

Obviously Empire Maker was going to be tough to beat coming off the rest, but it sounds like that didn't help.

They've been together since 1997.

the man is right.

i happen to go back with FUNNY CIDE when he was a yearling running around in a paddock at Joe McMann's farm in Saratoga. i had a mare that was bred and boarded there for about 5 years. i went to see the mare and foal and discovered what we were going to name FUNNY CIDE. i watched him for about an hour, he was a big powerful looking colt that was the leader of the pack amongst 5 or 6 horses in that paddock. i asked McMann how much he wanted for the horse, he told me it was owned by Winstar. he said they wanted $25k. for the horse. i asked him to see if they would take $20,000 before the sale. he called them and they said they wanted to run him through the ring.

i told my partner about him and he came down to see him 2 days later, then we looked at him again when he made it to the sales barns. Everard also likes the horse, and that's what we did back then, buy yearlings break them and get them ready for a 2 year old in training sale in Ocala. after gelding the horse, the light bulb went off on the horse. along comes Barclay Tagg to look at horses and the deal came off for $75,000 before the horse goes to the sale.

i am truly glad that these guys that rode around the country in a yellow school bus did so well. i was never going to be the guy that gets that horse to a big race, and they wound up winning 2 biggies.
