Now that made me laugh
If I remember right Smith had a long period where he would always go wide and appeared to be afraid to go to the rail. That might explain some of his riding stats on ground loss.
I think he got over it though

It was in the aftermath of a bad accident. He was riding scared. There was concern that he’d regain his prior form.

One of the more important horses Mike every rode was a horse named Top Honors. Its funny how such a nondescript horse could alter the history of the sport but I can argue this one did in regard to this record.
