NY Daily News cuts half its staff according to NBC News

Oh well. I guess those constant cover stories bashing Trump don't sell that well...even in NY City...who woulda thunk it...

The News over the last few years has gotten particularly partisan even farcical in their coverage. Good riddance.

I normally don't like to see people lose their jobs, but I make exceptions for liberals who demean those who don't think like them and try to shove their beliefs down everyone's throat. From reading the article and how bitter and lashing out many that lost their jobs were it is pretty obvious they were that type. The picture of the woman crying was priceless, brought back warm memories of election night.

That's what you take away from this gutting? It was critical of Trump, so F-em? And you call yourself a New Yorker?

This is what Tronc does. They acquire a struggling newspaper, then slash and burn. Chicago Tribune, Baltimore Sun, LA Times, etc.

But Trump did at least play some role..

Quote:
While Tronc had already made a round of cuts at the paper and others by centralizing some editorial operations in Chicago, the newspaper industry has been hit with a steep rise in the cost of newsprint due to a recent tariff increase by the Trump administration on uncoated groundwood paper from Canada, which supplies much of the U.S. market.

Also, aren't you a Yankee fan? No more Yankee beat writer. Inconceivable.

I used to love the News. Bought is every in the 70s-80s-90s.
Great horse racing page - Russ Harris, charts, stories....
I clipped out the page and put them all in a binder with notes on the charts, pace figure, speed figure......great resource.

The Saratoga special section on the weekend before the opener was a great deal, too. And the Battle of Saratoga, three guys betting every day and going head to head - interesting reading every day.

I bought a copy last SUnday, just to see if a Toga section was still there.
Nope. Just Trump bashing page after page - a really HORRIBLE excuse of a newspaper.

Good riddance, you lousy excuse of reporters.
Ironic Trump creates millions of jobs and YOU lose YOURS!

I was just observing that their constant over-the-top cartoonish headlines and front pages about Trump apparently wasn't enough to maintain a healthy, functioning newspaper.

I would have thought, with NY being such a liberal town, that people would be buying this paper left and right...but I guess not.

Nothing more, nothing less.

I do feel sorry for the people who have lost their jobs because the paper was misguided, mismanaged, and basically suffering from Trump Derangement Syndrome.

But thanks for playing.

From the original article:

"The Daily News lost some $90 million between 2014 and 2016, according to an SEC filing."

The paper was bleeding money well before any tariffs were in place. Enough with the hand-wringing on the "death of journalism." More like the death of an incredibly unprofitable business.

The NY Daily News at one time could have been purchased for a dollar -- yes, one thin US greenback.

Then owner-publisher Mort Zuckerman had the For Sale sign out for over a decade -- with little interest and no takers.

And, yes, I wrote $1 and I am not kidding. The caveat --to say the least-- was the buyer had to assume some very obscene financial obligations the NY Daily News had, notably that of unfunded pensions, capital improvements and numerous other expenses and loans that exceeded most businessman's wildest expectations.

I feel bad for everyone in this once-glorious profession that lose their jobs but the writing has been on the wall for decades, and yes, I mean decades. Journalism is a doomed industry, print media especially.

A single paper costs $1.50.

Maybe if they cut the price of the paper to $1.00 they would have survived!

I used to pay 35 cents for it.
Better paper back them.

The Times needs to do the same, maybe more. That would really shake up poor Dan's life.
