Uber dropping the program?

Quote:
Uber on Tuesday told the California Department of Motor Vehicles that the ride-hailing service will not renew its permit to test autonomous vehicles when it expires Saturday.

The backdrop: This comes on the heels of the company’s suspension of tests on public roads in the state, as well as in Pennsylvania, Arizona and Ontario in the wake of a fatality in Tempe, Arizona. The ride-hailing service has fought a year-long court battle over its self-driving car unit and put up a fight in late 2016 when it was asked to get a permit; Uber agreed to get one early last year.
This probably isn’t a case of Uber acting with a simple abundance of caution. The more the investigation into the fatal accident proceeds, the more questions have been raised. For one thing, it’s been revealed that the company was using fewer safety sensors than they originally had proposed, though it’s unclear if that was a factor in the case of the woman with the bicycle being killed. Reuters: Uber cut back on lidar in self-driving fleet:
https://seekingalpha.com/news/334221...-driving-fleet

Quote:
Uber (Private:UBER) scaled back on safety senses [sensors] when changing its self-driving fleet from Ford Fusions to Volvo SUVs in 2016, according to Reuters sources.

Sources say the decision gave the new fleet more blind spots than Uber’s earlier self-driving vehicles and the rivals

Nvidia CEO: Uber doesn't use our self-driving platform:
https://seekingalpha.com/news/334262...iving-platform

Quote:
Nvidia (NASDAQ:NVDA) CEO Jensen Huang says Uber (Private:UBER) doesn’t use his company’s DRIVE self-driving platform architecture.

Uber instead users Nvidia’s GPUs and “develops its own sensing and drive technology.”

My "lean" is:

Blame the technology itself?

Could be premature.

Blame human implementation of the tech?

Another matter entirely.

So the big thing is you can sit in the back seat, read a paper, watch a video, whatever, just not have to bother with the driving.

Kind of like a........CAB!

They are out there, now. There is one running in Houston. It’s a test by Uber. No Co driver either. It’s been spotted downtown, but no comment from Uber.

Great for door dash or Uber eats

Yeah it can set the climate controls to roast and assure your takeout is hot upon arrival. Course once the low life's catch on to driver-less meals on wheels. Smash and grabs will be on the menu.
