The CHRB's Equine Medical Director already oversees the track vets doing the pre-race exams, is the Governor insisting the state pay the vet's salary instead of the track?

How would the bettors feel if SA had to close with over $1M in the Rainbow pick 6 pool?

The board is a regulatory agency and does not have the power to suspend horse racing without approval of the designated track. It does have the power to take such action if it goes through a 10-day notification period.
Seven days left in the meet. lol

The thing is, when the news broke that the CHRB had requested SA stop, there were 11 days until the next scheduled board meeting (6/20). They could have added this item to the agenda, met the 10 day period, and voted to cease racing for the remainder of the meet (which would be 3 racing days).
They didn't.
So if the situation is dire enough to warrant a public comment to stop the last 6 days of racing, why not exercise the authority they actually have to stop the last 3 days?
Welcome to California, where everyone talks the talk, but no one has the sack to actually walk the walk.

I was under the impression that Santa Anita's breakdown rate significantly decreased in the past month or so.
Is my impression false?
Or is my impression accurate, and we have a situation where politics and media has been 'vulturing'?

I guess Newsom got TSG/CHRB to listen.

Effective immediately, in response to Governor Gavin Newsom's direction, the California Horse Racing Board (CHRB), working closely with The Stronach Group (TSG), owner of Santa Anita Park, will implement enhanced safety measures and reviews to further protect horses at Santa Anita.
Led by CHRB Equine Medical Director Dr. Rick Arthur, DVM, and Chief Steward Darrel McHargue, a five-member team will provide additional review of horses' medical, training and racing history. This team consists of independent CHRB veterinarians and stewards, empowered to scratch horses that do not appear fit to run.
Specifically, the horse safety review team will utilize a new, comprehensive evaluation rubric to determine if each individual horse is at elevated risk of injury before racing. These criteria will include any history on the Veterinarian's List and Steward's List as well as any medical history, race history, and physical observations of the horse.
|
Also, this new panel has to unanimously agree that a horse is fit to race. Any dissent from any single member means the horse will not race.

Newsom stuck his neck out and from now on when a horse goes down......... he has a reason to speak.

California's toast all because SA wouldn't suspend the meet before politicians got involved. Del Mar will continue a normal breakdown rate and this thing is on the next ballot. Imo next Sunday will be the last day we see racing at SA

I still believe this thing was ochestrated for maximum press coverage. The media has been complicit in this entire thing, counting every horse that goes down whether its in training or racing. Santa Anita is essentially the backbone of California horse racing. It hosts the Spring meet which lasts until June. Since its in the LA media market, something bad that happens at Santa Anita will get way more press coverage than Del Mar or Los Alamitos. The anti-horse racing folks love this because this got way more coverage than when Del Mar had their problems.

The media has been complicit in the sense that a whole bunch of dying horses is a completely legitimate news story, which it covered
Do people in the industry seriously believe this stuff? That the public and the media is just supposed to ignore it when horses are dying on the track?
