Mr. Wrona is okay as announcer, capable and with a unique style. The track decided not to renew his contract after it expired. I don't see how this represents a sign of the demise of Santa Anita. Trevor is a great announcer and the racing, attendance and handle at the current DMR meet are pretty weak. I can't imagine attending or not attending (or betting on-line) based on the track announcer.

Or any analyst. The trend, in fact, is to hire cheaper or amputate parts of the presentation completely.
Those who covet and politic for on-air handicapping gigs just do not get it. The golden age is over. And the next wave gets scraps.

Wrona is an elite top 3 announcer. I have no clue what a top tier announcer makes but this is not a money issue. There is a hair in the butter. Wrona is outstanding.

Correct.
It's actually even more ridiculous than that- throughout most of the Santa Anita plant, you can't even hear Wrona's calls. The speakers are terrible.

Eliminate all race-announcers, I say...and use the money to get a high definition feed for all the tracks and the ADWs. Then we can follow the horses in the race all by ourselves.

When was the golden age? Even as a teen I was reading about players missing the golden age and that was a long time ago.

Nothing against Frank Mirahmadi he’s very very good. This guy at GG is okay. But they are not even in the league of Wrona.

Bear in mind, if it is, the basic calculation is correct. If I ran a track I would hire the cheapest announcer possible, and have him or her do multiple duties. Bettors aren't going to stop betting because they don't like the race calls.

Slice and dice or turn it inside out ("if it is a cost cutting move the 'calculation' is correct") anyway you want. The fact is the place falling apart. The fields are a joke, the attendance is falling and the goodwill with longtime customers, bettors, owners and people connected generally with the sport is taking a beating.
But that's fine, as long as we can still pinch pennies. Eddie Lampert here we come.

I could see your point if a person jumps from track to track betting races, but I like to focus on one meet and learn the track and trainer tendencies. When I play an entire meet I don’t want to be irritated everytime I hear the racecaller. I will say, I think 90% of racecallers do a good job.

According to him, and who knows with him sometimes, when the new Mall at Aventura opened up it throttled Gulfstream's retail and restaurant business. I thought the place looked bleak/empty when I was there but admittedly it was in the summertime and pretty hot.
Santa Anita is already adjacent to a huge Westfield mall with tons of restaurants so it would be interesting to see what they think they could bring to the table.
|
I'm curious if Santa Anita is truly integrated with the Westfield Mall? Because one of the coolest things about the Villages at Gulfstream is its completely metastasized into the Racetrack & Casino grounds.
In other words, you're strolling along the shops and restaurants and the Track is right there.. not even a traditional entrance per se... You're window shopping and you look up and there's the 16 foot by 16 foot video screen with odds and live track feed.
When you go to dinner at the Yard House in Gulfstream Village. which technically is not a part of the the race track... all the TV's are set to Horse Racing..
All of a sudden horse racing feels less fringe and more Posh and Upscale...
I actually think its different and made me think what Belmont could do with its huge empty race track and grounds.
I'm working nearby in Dania, and I've been to Gulfstream Village for dinner 5 or 6 times in the last two weeks... They have a big Christmas tree and small rides for the kids....and I see tons of Baby Strollers and families just hanging out at the Villages common area... so its very family friendly, which NAME ME ONE TRACK besides Saratoga that is family friendly?
To me its cool as shit. But at the same time, its South Florida and there is no no lack of competition for the entertainment and discretionary money...
The Mall at Aventura is smoking hot .... in all ways.

For me it's more than Wrona. Santa Anita doesn't have much to offer and the future doesn't look real good.
