I have some quick questions. One, is it good to have no inbreeding through the fifth cross? I am assuming it is. Or do you want a little bit?

What is hip number? Is the number on the horses hip or is it an acronym for horse in pen or something else?

Hip Number is the number given to the horse for the purpose of identification at the sale. They actually wear the number.

Inbreeding is the norm.
Hip No. 332 is unique because the mother or "dam" PROUD EYES introduces foreign blood back into the mix.
pedigreequery.com

^We can see British, German, French, and American blood close up in the pedigree. We can see with PROUD EYES, that she is inbred to HYPERION(1930), and WOMEN'S LEGION(1940).

We have some pedigree experts on this site, maybe they can add more about inbreeding.

The press release says the sale is a success.

Good for them, I guess, but did the participation of Maktoum/et. al and the Irish seem a bit trepid? Magnier’s only big purchase was a colt whose sire and damsire were Irish. Shadwell was active only in the mid-range, and colts only—no fillies.

Following the Breeders Cup/lasix dust up, were messages being sent? I only follow these sales casually at most; maybe someone more familiar could comment if there was anything aberrational of the foreign participation in the Keeneland Yearling Sale so far.

Thank you for your heartfelt enthusiasm.

There are 3 graded groups of yearlings: Group 1 ("Book 1", 4 days ending today, Thursday), Group 2 ("Book 2", Saturday and Sunday), and Group 3 ("Books 3-5", next Monday through Saturday).

"Book 1", the 'top' yearlings, has 4 sessions: Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday (today). The yearlings have been sold alphabetically by dam name, starting with "F" on Day 1 and ending with "E" today.

You have to wait until the end of Book 1, the end of Thursday, to make the best judgments on how the four-day "Book 1" went. Yearlings selling today could just have easily been the ones selling on opening day had they started alphabetically with mare names beginning with "A".

That said, through the first 3 days there have been 13 $1M yearlings. Last year there were 7. The 13 is the most since 2008, when there were 18.

Sure, the chances of fireworks decreases as the sales makes its way through the 3 major groupings, but this sale is far, far from over.

It takes about 2 clicks (and 6 seconds) to find a sortable table of sales results at Keeneland's website. You can sort by sale price. Plenty of non-American names up there in the "Buyer" column.

As to sending messages, I have one for anyone seriously uninterested in America's top sires... stay the fvck home. Maybe get an online poker playing account, or something.

The Coolmore and Godolphin groups were writing checks with both hands today. So much for my supposition about a "message being sent".

You were right about a message being sent at the top of this sale, just a little bit off on what the message actually was. The message was: "We want!"

The list of $1M yearlings now stands at 18, with Book 2 still to come over Saturday and Sunday. There could still be a few more fireworks lying around that haven't been shot off yet.

Starting on Monday (Books 3-5) the scenery, and competition, will start to take on a different look. For one thing, the ratio of khaki pants to cowboy hats among the buyers starts to tilt.

These 2 were also grade A True Nicks rated horses. In fact both were rated A++.

Hip 743 has the highest variant I have ever seen. 71.33?! I don't know True Nicks well enough to verify things like sample size and methodology, but everything I posted from session 4 were my take on physicality handicapping + breeding (good looking, + well bred).

I first saw Hip 743, and I thought she was going to be primarily a good racehorse(Candy Ride x Carson City Mare). The agent for Dogwood Stables purchased the horse. I would guess, if things go well, she may be in the Todd Pletcher barn.

Too early for OAKS futures ?

When I lived in Lexington, I went to a couple of the sales and found them to be quite interesting. It's always not like wagering and looking for "value" - a lot of the prices seem to be related to what's "fashionable". Some of the horses had obvious breeding which led to higher bids, but others were real head scratchers for me - similarly bred horses might go for $250K and $30K on the same afternoon.

The first horse posted, hip 291, does make sense to me - the horse looked awesome in the ring, and she's got the breeding to be something very special. I did notice her two hind feet are white - I seem to remember reading that one off-color foot can be a bad thing, but I don't know if that's true.

As always though, some real gambling going on there in the sales ring. Thanks for posting, Robert.
