Fri 02-19-2021 AQU R4

Imo, some interesting battles between riders today at AQU in R4.

Both #5 CHILLY CHOOS and #7 HALF DAY PAM are contending for the lead on the outside towards the end of the backstretch.

Manny Franco, aboard #7 HALF DAY PAM, appears to come in a little to brush with Luis Cardenas aboard #5 CHILLY CHOOS.

Cardenas then appears to come out to return the favor.

But Franco's filly eventually gets the better of that matchup.

In the upper stretch, Eric Cancel aboard #1 DOYOUKNOWWHOIAM is contending for the lead on the rail.

Franco comes in bit and puts Cancel in a tight spot.

Franco gets the better of that matchup too, and Cancel appears to throw in the towel.

Meanwhile, Kendrick Carmouche aboard #3 TELLAPERFECTTALE is rallying down the outside.

Franco then goes to the whip left handed and comes out several paths.

Franco doesn't stop coming out until his filly is shoulder to shoulder with Carmouche's filly.

Carmouche's filly appears to head Franco's filly for a brief moment.

But Franco's filly responds, and gets her head in front in the shadow of the wire.

Questions for those with some knowledge about evaluating trips and horse behavior:

Do you think Franco's herding tactics were the difference between winning and losing in this race?

Or do you think #7 HALF DAY PAM could have won by a length or two, if instead of drifting in and out in an effort to intimidate, Franco simply picked a path, urged his mount for max effort, and ran a straight line?

The pan looked questionable vs. Cancel on the rail horse, but the head on was much more innocent. Franco seemed to maintain a fairly straight path until drifting, but not bumping the Carmouche horse nearing the wire.

Look at Pam's debut on Jan 9. She shifts a bit on the backstretch almost in the same location on the backstretch, and once entering the stretch she weaves a bit for Morales while not really needing to alter paths.

She seems to just be green in her first two starts, in my opinion. Regarding the outcome, I would need something a bit more drastic to hinder the momentum of a half ton animal.
