Rest in Peace, you bad mother fuyer, but may your team lose by 7 tonight.
Every middle linebacker in HS and college wanted to wear 51 back in the day.
You were the man! Condolences to your family and friends.

There never was, nor will there ever be, a player who played the game with the intensity that Dick Butkus did. One year, the Chicago Bears only won one game all year...and yet Butkus was voted "Defensive Player of the Year". Can you imagine that?

I thought Butkus would live forever.

In my mind he will.

Some of us are old enough to remember Art Donovan.

What a piece of work he was.

I got in trouble with my Dad for getting my hair cut like Art.
Man he was pissed. Mom too.

Seemed like all the kids did it at once. If you didn’t look like Donovan or Butkus you looked like Johnny U. Then we all had to look like Broadway Joe cause that was the future.

Donovan was hysterical on late night talk shows

One helluva tough player. Dick Butkus will always be remembered as being feared by opposing players. Butkus and Doug Buffone were a tough pair for the Bears back in those days.

Butkus was the best but man were there some tough as nails middle linebackers when I was a kid before the 3-4 innovation, to name a few: Butkus, Ray Nitschke, Tommy Nobis, Mike Lucci, Mike Curtis

I'd add Lee Roy Jordan and willie Lanier to that list

While there may be better athletes today, compared to 60 years ago they are a bunch of pussies. Compared to Butkus, Lyle Alzado and many other.... well there is no comparison.

60 years ago a lot of NFL teams were not into weight training, if you go back 50 years with the weight training and nutritional supplements they were on almost an even keel with today's athletes. The big difference between now and 50 years ago is medical advances, both the legal and illegal kind.
