I was born in California in 1961, in the late 60's early 70's I lived about a dozen miles from Palm Springs which today is considered a gay haven. The rainbow flag was first displayed in San Francisco another gay haven in the late 70's.
Palm Springs was not a gay haven when I lived in that area as the local authorities at the time did not want their business.
A half dozen miles closer to my home it was rumored that unincorporated at the time Cathedral City had gay bars.
I used to often ride my bike past Oil Can Harry's which was rumored to be a gay bar, and today on the internet you can confirm it was. I have no idea if
they just attracted customers by word of mouth. There was one place called The GAF, that is kind of obvious.
You can find out today many of those clubs had drag shows, yet in that time
period no one appeared in public that way. There weren't any Lori Lightfoot types trying hard to look like men. It was all behind closed doors. Those places with drag shows must of had locker rooms.
