It's a different game, jockeys vs drivers. Test my theory, put a little child on your back and run around the block, then put him in a wagon and pull him. Which is more stressful?

I would think a pace or trot is a lot less stressful on joints and bones plus making a misstep less likely than running. They are also traveling a lot slower,
and are further apart, giving a driver more time and space to react.
