hoops back in the day

__________

6 '5" Jumpin Johnny Green and Gus Johnson were 2 legends from the Baltimore Bullets and other teams. the pic is Jumpin Johnny blocking Wilt Chamberlain's dunk. he loved to torment the big guy. he dunked on him lots and lots of times. sadly, there is not a lot of video from that era so I can't show how high he could actually get up. but I know this player - and I knew he could get up close to the top of the backboard

Gus Johnson was the strongest player I ever saw. I believe he was one of the strongest who ever played the game. I don't believe Gus ever worked out with weights or similar stuff. I believe his great strength was all natural

I saw him shatter and demolish 2 backboards with his shocking dunks

Another guy who tormented Wilt was Bill Russell. Wilt was a force on the offensive end, but Russell was a wall.

I recall an article where Gene Wiley (As I recall, a small-baller-with-size for the Lakers) rejected 3 dunks in a row from Wilt.

I think Wilt actually got all 3 rebounds and succeeded on the 4th attempt.

When asked why he dunked the ball all the time, he said that it was a high percentage shot. His words were: "When I dunk, I have a 100% chance of making it."

Well, apparently not. LOL

Wilt could pick a quarter off the top of the backboard and leave two dimes and a nickle as change.
He could damn near shatter a back board with his free throws.

DC's own Austin Carr from Mackin High, was far and way the greatest high school player I ever saw

in 1970, before the 3 point thing, while at Notre Dame, he set a record which may never be broken:

61 points in an NCAA Tournament Game

if the 3 point thing was in effect he probably would have had more than 75

absolutely dazzling

his Junior and Senior years at Notre Dame he averaged 38 p.p.g.

that's way more than Wilt Chamberlain averaged while in College

what a joy he was to watch

The night Wilt scored 100 points, an opponent decided to stop him. So, he grabbed his arms to stop him from going up to dunk. Wilt dunked it anyway.

Wilt was pretty much a man playing against boys.

... but could barely hit the rim on a bet. LOL

And yet, tied for the record for most free throws made in one game with 28.

David Thompson was only 6-4 and could touch the top of the backboard. That was a nice block by Russel, equally impressive, I saw Dr J block Kareem Abdul-Jabbar hook shot in one game.

He actually shot his free throws both ways at different times during his career.

when Kareem first showed his sky hook (he didn't shoot that in college) the word got out - nobody would ever block the sky hook

but here's Wilt getting it twice in a row______________________________(~:/

here's another great one - Dr. J dunking over the man mountain Bill Walton

I have a distinct ingrained dislike for the modern game of basketball. Not that I don’t appreciate the talent of modern athletes, I do. It’s just not the game I was taught. I grew up in the 50’s-60’s and learned the game in jr-high and high school. Palming and traveling were no-no’s. You’d get benched for that. I see it now and can’t get past it. It just pisses me to no end. When I watch a drive and count the steps everyone travels.

Am I the only one?
