New Breeder’s Cup Times
Via Randy Moss on Twitter
Quote:
It was bound to happen. Del Mar's new GMax timing system laid an egg on the sport's championship day. Equibase has issued revised final times for three Breeders' Cup races - oh, and the GPS-timed fractions for the Distaff and Classic are wrong, too.

I think I tweeted on BC day (when it was already clear the times were wrong) that if I ran Longines I wouldn't want to be associated with Del Mar's timing system.

I don't think Longines does business with Santa Anita anymore.

We really need to get this industry out of the Stone Age. The Beyer/Moss team and CJ and his partner do a great job of finding and correcting these things, but it’s crazy that they have to put any time and energy into checking times and potentially correctly figures to begin with. I don’t know how they have time to handicap and play races. It doesn’t impact me as much as many other people because my approach is different, but if you are very figure oriented and see they can’t even get the BC right, how can you trust time based figures for all the races no one has time to check? The drug issue is bad enough, you can’t have people not trusting the data also.

The weird thing is a constant frame rate digital video timing system could literally be programmed into the system with a computer program so long as the track positioned the gate accurately in each race. All the computer would have to do is count the number of frames in each race and report it along with the runup and, voila, you'd have accurate final time speed figures for each race.

Let’s say that the times are even accurate, temp rails and run ups still make them useless

Not if you know how to account for them.

Has anyone seen an article listing which races were changed and by how much?

I have all that data stored in my database. I can look at it later. I just checked the Beyer figures and as of 5 minutes ago no figures were changed in Formulator (yet?).

If you can account for incorrectly reported runups and rail distances, you can account for incorrect times

That is two different things. You said accurate times are useless because of temp rails and run ups, not inaccurate rails and run ups.
