And i just spent like 10mins looking at this guy's female line in the pedigree before I checked if this was a new thread or indeed good old Galloping Grocer the NY bred

Beautiful story. Good luck to those fine people in animal rescue. I remember Galloping Grocer the top New York bred two year old, lost a heartbreaker to Rockport Harbor in the Remsen and was never the same after that. I hope he lives long and prospers.

Good points by TLG in this thread. The average trainer can't take a horse all over the country on the Derby Trail. I believe Schettino even admitted that he couldn't.

That same year, I was in love with Naughty New Yorker. Only two possibilities that he would even get close to the Derby with Patrick Kelly and Jean Luc Samyn --- slim and none; and slim scratched.

Giacomo won the derby that year. Naughty New York was as arguably as good a colt as Giacomo. The Naughty one -he still is in training and should start soon- could have won that race on his best day.
